Why are +-frags on this website anyway

there's a point for this kinda stuff on rebbit because it changes the post order, but the only thing it does here is nothing, except making people read posts with a bias if there are lots of +-frags going on, which is pretty shitty if what you want is thought out discussion from everyone. it encourages sheep mentality for no good reason really.

I've always wondered if people on tf.tv actually do plus frag their own posts because I know on occasion I have when I'm feeling insecure about my internet points.

I minus frag my own posts to be trendy, in fact I prefer minus frags, makes me look hipster.

If I'm in a hurry and a thread looks real juicy and I want to skim it through I asume the ones with a lot of +/-frags are the ones worth reading.

I would assume that they have some sort of intention of making "higher quality" posts stand out to people who don't know the background of the thread, but yeah, it just turns into whether or not you like the person who's making the post.

If you are seriously affected by a posts +frag count one way or the other may I suggest not caring instead. At the very least it's not like gotfrag where you got fragged if you hit -20 so there's pretty much 0 reason to care about them here

I'm torn because despite its flaws, it's also a good way for the non-vocal majority to represent their opinions on matters of discussion. I definitely think the system could use some tweaking.
Maybe posters could subscribe to fraggability on a per-post basis for such cases? ofc they could still turn it on when they make a joke or something but that would look masturbary. An upside or downside depending on your perspective. Alternatively, maybe enigma could add polls to the forum?

If people express desire for some alterations then I'm sure ideas will start rolling. I'd prefer to not have to "just ignore" a system that we're all constantly exposed to and has a clear bearing on a person's perceived credibility.

reddit solved this recently by allowing subreddit owners to hide comment scores for a set amount of time so people don't vote down/vote up something just because someone else is doing it.

I think it's just silly that people would do that.

While I love the +frags and -frags here you can't deny what freshmeat is saying is true. Many people form their opinion based on the number of +frags a post has rather than the facts at hand, and that effect only snowballs the more people read and +frag(or -frag) the post.

Unfortunately, I'm not really sure there's a solution for that.
