There won't be any real successful competitive shooters until the fucking moba craze dies down.

Multigaming organizations and companies who solo sponsor want to invest in the most popular games, as they have the most money behind them, get the most attention, and bring more people to their website/twitch/youtube/social media site. Right now that's moba, sadly.

I've been going to pax east every year since it started (not going anymore tho, it's shit now). Pax is huge. It's almost got E3 status. Every year you see more and more booths showing off their new game. "It's a new take on moba. You see it's exactly the same as every other one except in this one you can [insert totally useless minor difference here]."

People line up all weekend to try them. I've seen RIOT employees make kids "bark like a dog" and "kiss the floor" for some stupid skin code. As long as people keep flocking to moba their wont be any successful competitive FPS games. Tribes had a chance, and then hi-rez killed it off to focus on "smite"... A fucking moba. TF2 and CS will have to carry the torch for now.

I'm still able to snag CoD 4 promod scrims most nights. No leagues or anything for NA, though.

Recently been playing a lot of Smite, I hate MOBA's but smite is the only exception. It's actually fun

The fact (?) that TF2 is currently the 2nd biggest shooter competitively is kinda scary.

Quake is still...reasonably sized. The Euro scene has tournaments for Quake Live duel each month.

Check out Xonotic, imo the game is pretty similar to CPMA and QW with its own twist...

Xonotic, much like warsow/ut2k4/ut3/red eclipse are all dead for the most part.
Occasionally you can find an active server, but at most given times in the day you wont find more than 3 servers with people on them, and itll probably be instagib or a duel server. The best way to play xonotic is to have a pug group or wait for a community event(unless you're dueling, in which case just get a friend.)

smites pretty dumb in regards to atypical moba mechanics. nothing wrong with enjoying it though

tribes had no chance. the game was never at any point significantly popular. why would a company abandon a game if it had a chance to succeed (making them money in the process)? smite became way more popular than tribes ever was upon its release so it makes sense for them to focus on that.

there will not be some new title that garners the popularity to have a giant fps esports scene. fps market is far too oversaturated and has ease of use issues.

Tribes was an awful pub game. The only redeemable gamemode was DM, and even that got old quick since the game wasnt balanced for it.

All they needed was competitive matchmaking so people could actually play the game they were trying to make. Not that pub garbage with 12 tech's and flag runners solo capping with airstrikes.

Almost all the weapons are instagib (save for splash damage, shotgun, lightning gun, machine gun.. those just kill really fast but not instantly) multiple jumps in the air, cpm air control, bfg slides which could drive you to a desired location across the map near instantly if you shot the bfg in the corner at a specific angle, and no fall damage or self damage of course.

Fastest/twitchiest game I've ever played, and possibly the most fun I've ever had. My aim was at it's peak in those days.
