I made this thread with the intent to see how long a few of you have been around, see how you found out about competitive tf2, and if you've been playing competitively, how long?
Here's an example:
How long have I been "around": I've been actually watching the competitive scene of this game for a while. I stumbled along the eMg vs coL ESEA finals from one of the earlier seasons. I think that was about 5 years ago. So I would've been 12 or so. (I didn't own the game though. But watching that match was the first experience I had with tf2 and made me want the game.)
How I found out about comp tf2: See above
How long I play competitively: My first season was actually the summer season of UGC. But I've been in a few PUGS and stuff.
(I actually played about two years of competitive XBOX TF2 when my PC was busted.)

I would be if it weren't for the fact that the people there told me about 3 times a day that I wasn't dreaming. All we played was Granary and Gravel Pit.
EDIT: You may not believe us. But after PUGs and scrims, we would actually be able to find servers full enough for us to legitimately pub-stomp.
EDIT 2: If I remember correctly, quite a few of those players ALSO play PC TF2, and do so with a game pad.

i got into tf2 a little before i46 and i think i46 seriously influenced me to play the game this long. It gave me this sense of excitement that there was this much passion and emotion in an fps. this was my first comp fps game.
I remember when i first came into newbie mixes and was amazed by all the new things that i was learning about this fascinating game and i met people around me that also took that liking.
damn i love this game.

I first watched the S10 LAN stream because of a friend. After that, I joined in on the next newbie mixes and I formed a UGC 6s team with my internet buds. I somehow made my way into New Map Weekends despite having little experience.
To this day, I'm mediocre. Most likely I haven't been able to be on a team for longer than a few weeks without it dying or my schedule conflicting. If I didn't have so many other games to play I'd actually try to play right now.

Came across TF2 from youtube videos, googled it and it came up with ETF2L. Think I was around when TviQ first joined Crack Clan (cc// <3) which is like september 2011 i think.
So I've been around for 3 years and was into comp from the start.
First really got into actually playing comp by newbie mixes when pie_hero was coaching, dunno if he still is

Started watching during the S11 LAN, after playing tf2 for a month or two. Started playing comp the next UGC 6s season with some friends, I think we ran pyro, engie, solly, medic, spy, sniper. *cringe*
Started taking comp seriously after Noona's newbie mix run ended.

I joined the competitive scene in the fall of 2012 with UGC Highlander Season 8. While I played before then, I wasn't involved in the community at all. Got into 6s a couple months after that subbing for my Highlander teammates. Played in Open in S15, but I've had bad luck with Open teams dying so I've pretty much stuck to Highlander, even though I don't have a preference of format.
I'm really really bad for playing comp for 2 years. I try to give back to people via mentoring, but I just get 13 year olds asking to MGE me

Competitively - early 2008
8v8 was standard. 2fort, dustbowl, and cp_well were the prime attractions.
Played in the first serious real-deal money 6s tournament (the CGS) in late 2008 with my team bubbles (.•°) CGS was actually great for tf2:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Championship_Gaming_Series
"The CGS Pro-Am Division was a players opportunity to play against the Pros and compete for more than $40,000 in cash prizes. The first season included Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Source, and Team Fortress 2 tournaments. Sadly, shortly after the first season was completed The CGS franchise was cut by Direct-TV which ultimately ended this opportunity for another competitive league for the everyday gamer."
Keep in mind for TF2 there were no 'pros' set already so it was just the top teams around then against each other. It's really fucking weird to think about what TF2 would be now if the CGS stuck around, it was serious SERIOUS exposure.
RIP

I first heard about competitive TF2 when looking up how to get better at the game back in 2010. Didn't actually start playing though until UGC HL S7 2 years ago. Planning on the next season of ESEA being my 1st season of it.

Started playing around May 2009 just before the sniper/spy update came out, was mostly attracted by using a bow and arrow(huntsman) in an fps. Played pubs(pretty much just 2fort and badwater) for 2 more years.
I'd heard a little about competitive but didn't really care for it until in 2011 a friend from the skial badwater pub I frequented asked me to snipe on his wireplay highlander team, I played on that for a few weeks(without mumble at that) and then started trying out games on tf2lobby, mostly highlander because 6s seemed too daunting.
All that changed when I moved to the UK in September 2013 and could finally use mumble and hence play on a proper team, loved 6s and going strong since.

ive been pretty on and off with tf2 for a long ass time. My first experience with competitive tf2 was back in 2009 or so when I saw something about it on gamefaqs. Then I played 6v6 badwater as an engineer in #tf2.gather.us. My first impression was very weird as you can probably tell. It took me a really long time to be anywhere close to decent because I had terrible DM. I couldn't even make mvp in pubs, but still, i trekked on and eventually became a low/mid scout. After a few months of playing pugs I quit because I moved to hawaii and the timezone fucked me over.
A couple years later I moved to washington and I broke my collarbone so I got back into playing video juegos. From here until the end of senior year I was really on and off about actually playing because my parents are kinda crazy when it comes to video games.
From july until now is probably the longest amount of time I've been able to play consistently and I feel like I'm getting some mad results :>

More recently than a lot of other people have been around TF2. Complexity, Quantic, and The Experiment were all teams that I watched.

I found out about tf2 in general from iaresnipar aka ma3la's videos
I decided I thought the game would be fun (I was 13 at the time) and I got the orange box for christmas in 2010.
I started playing Tf2 in january (after completing portal and playing a bit of half life)
Not long after I met competetive players in a granary pub, it was empty except for them. I played with them for a bit (it was a lot less playing and more of me trying to pass off as one of them (one of them was a hatless pyro, so I switched to pyro and remove my gibus and shit))
I learned that were competetive players and actually played with them quite a bit (they played a lot of PLR, which I have learned since is actually just a tdm gamemode).
As for competetive, I learned about it through these players but didn't really start paying attention to it until season 12. I played lobbies before that but I wasn't really part of it yet.
Since then I have taken frequent breaks but all the action that happened during s12 and i46 really did drag me in.
Shoutout to Jayskye aka Logic a long time friend of mine who was one of those players I met in that granary pub four years ago

I was part of a pub community back in 2010-11 that had a small group of people who tried to start a comp team there, and eventually i got interested in it, and even though i didn't play for them i met some people through them that got me on a team (which died) and then onto a new team.
Ironically enough the pub community was chill as fuck until everyone got interested in comp, then the servers were no longer about playing the game to have fun, everyone was "training" for their match. not even joking, a highlander player on there once attempted to tell me i was playing the game wrong for not using stock everything. rofl

I got the game in mid 2011 but barely played it, then I started pubbing for a while and eventually in like late 2012 I found out about competitive tf2. Eventually joined a ugc 6s team in summer of 2013.

I started watching competitive like 2 months before I got the game, which was November 2009.
I started playing competitive in November 2012, I ended up playing demo for my 6s team's HL team. Which was S9 of UGC. My first season of ESEA was this season, S17.

Got The Orange Box for christmas '07 played it a bunch, at the time valve started cranking out updates with new items my PC died and I didn't play again until january 2012.
I found numlocked's stream on twitch before i49 and found it very entertaining. Started watching the ETF2L season and then i49 and was hooked. Started playing comp myself after that.

About half way through Mihalys Flow anticipated undefeated season. I drank the koolaid. The koolaid did not deliver. I've been hooked ever since.

started watching around the time tgbf was a thing (season 5?). started playing highlander (season 6) because cygnus needed a demo then moved on to ESEA in season 12 after I realized how much pyros suck to play against.
