HL is closer to Pub and Tf2 is mostly a casual pub game, putting a 6v6 into Official Matchmaking will confuse all pub players and they will just go any class they want, no medic, or no demo, 2 spies, 2 snipers etc.
For 6v6, what about locking the important classes ie; Medic, Demoman.. maybe even Pocket ?

Wow between this and the youtube 60fps, life on the internet is good
I wonder if you select your classe before or after entering the queue.
Making it before would help getting the important classes for 6v6 format (if it's supported) so you actually get a demo/soldier/medic and not 6 clueless pyros
it would also make sure that everyone plays what he likes in HL
Spy queue 2 hours 12 miutes / Heavy queue 10 seconds

Dude there's tons of brainless pub heavies. There will be no problem filling any spots

:not funny joke pretending heavy is a brainless class anyway:

This is contradictory to Valve speaking publicly against competetive tf2.

I've never seen them publicly speaking against it. The closest they've come was talking about why they don't like the current competitive 6v6 format, and that was a second-hand report by Sal from the meeting with Robin Walker last year, and that was only posted here.

Oh my god. I'm crying. This is the greatest day ever.
I was gonna close this thread immediately when I heard about the competitive mode and new matchmaking, although I want it, I was like "Wait, this is Valve, they'll find a way to make me lose faith", glad I kept reading and saw mp_highlander.
Also, I don't think the matchmaking will require that many servers. If it was 6's, then yes, but since it's HL, that's 18 people a server, and a big part of TF2 players might not play it and stick their pubs/trading.
But would restricting this mode to people with a certain amount of hours be a good idea? That way players with barely any TF2 experience or knowledge can't join and possibly create a disadvantage for the team. This would also help limit the amount of people that can join matchmaking, and require a bit less servers. I think maybe setting it to requiring 100 hours to play would be fair. This would also help stop people making a new alt and trying to matchmake and try to stomp players that are lower skilled. They have their own kind of guard like this for Dota 2.

all the variables about player skill make me think new players will be sorted into their own tier anyways.

even if its a highlander-style format i hope they have the foresight to realise that requiring 18 players for a matchmaking game to start is going to mean incredibly painful wait times (especially if you pick a class before you queue)
^ If Arena:Respawn works out, then Valve should probably just make that a new game mode (or modify the current Arena), add it to Quickplay, and then make this potential system for it.

Not that surprising, if you consider other Valve games.

Replicated just mirrors it to the client. That's common for most server settings, just so that the client knows about them.

I think the best solution to this is for a player to be able to pick more than one class they are willing to play which would reduce match times. The client could even encourage you in a particular direction depending on what is heavily chosen. Valve also have the option of producing item inducements to varied play that cost them nothing.

maybe instead of a pick/ban system on weapons, the lobby votes on which HL league's whitelist they use

if u thought cs mm egos were bad wait until u have pub heavy/medics in tf2 mm
If they implement a 6s system (which they probably won't because it doesn't cater to all 9 classes very well) they could limit off-classing to 1. Have people queue up beforehand to their desired class and force them to play that class, or allow 1 person on the team at a time to off-class. It might help keep matchmaking from turning in TF2center/lobby 6s which is a horrible combination of people who suck at 6s, and people who are way above TF2center skill playing huntsman sniper instead of demo because their opponents are nowhere near their level.

What is the point of it being 6v6 then?
What is the point of it being 6v6 then?
the only way I can see valve doing 6s is by starting with real basic limitations (i.e. only classlimits) and then having a kind of captain's mode later, so they don't dump unbalanced weapons like the quickfix on it
or maybe they're just spending a lot of time trying to make sure the whole system is good like that instead of going to roll out a half-finished product

If everything goes well, we should be giving input and following the whole progress closely to make sure there is a smooth implementation of competitive into the game.
There was some important communication in the works from various active members of our community and these findings couldn't have come in a better time, I'm sure after everything is disclosed from both sides this will be a much smoother sailing from here on out.

dashnerNightGoatLets just hope its 6v6 and/or highlander and not some weird shit they made up.
It will be their own take on competitive, you'd be a fool to think otherwise. Beyond the meeting with Sal/eXtine, we've literally had zero contact with Valve on this, and when we did they rejected our ideas.
We (the comp TF2 community) equally rejected their ideas.
