If i had to guess it's probably a fighting game of some kind. More than likely one of the 'anime' fighters.

its a word used to describe a genre of fighting games. regardless of whether or not you like anime the games themselves are very well made.

RTS (Starcraft 2 excluded).

The amount of mental pressure and decision making while micro-managing armies and bases has yet to be surpassed. It's part of the reason why RTS genre died down, the casual audience doesn't want to deal with it. Arena FPS would be right behind them. Then some ways down would probably be fighting games, and then some more ways down would be TBS and FPS. Forgot moba's, but I have no idea where they would fit, somewhere around fighting games I guess.

If we aren't talking about dead e-sports, then Fighting Games.

there is no ultimate "hardest" e-sport. All genres and all seperate games have gameplay mechanics that can't be compared. Some games require teamwork and communication which other genres don't. For example MOBAs vs fighting games. But fighting games can be much more complex mechanically. You can't compare the two

There is no objective answer to this question

most of the answers given here are built on the idea of "hard" being on a technical/execution level, which is a bit more reasonable to ask

wasn't TFC pretty extreme in how much technical control it gave you? I never played it in its heyday so I wouldn't know, but I recall that being an argument that was made when talking about the future of TF2

otherwise, my answer is f zero gx. watch a real-time speedrun of that game, shit's wild

I feel like dota should be up there just because of all the shit that you need to know to be at the top. Like to be a PPD or puppy level drafter is just absurd.

all of them that being played now are pretty hard

it's really hard to judge what's exactly hard because in all popular e-sport games now you have to put in a ridiculous amount of time to even breach high level play

unno man hard question, i don't think anyone truly has an answer for this

EDIT: hearthstone is definitely one of the easier ones haha

i personally said melee because it combines being incredibly proficient technically (actually doing the tech, being able to combo, etc) but also a really difficult mental game (reads on DI, tech, rolls, etc, knowing what your opponent's going to do, and not tilting all throughout this, not to mention the crowd pressure).

but kev has a point, most esports are esports because they have incredibly high skill ceilings and therefore are hard as hell to play at top levels, you could make a case for each of them being the hardest except for maybe hearthstone

Niko_JimsRTS (Starcraft 2 excluded).

Why did you exclude Starcraft? Genuine question, there seem to be some mixed opinions throughout the thread. What makes Starcraft 2 easier than other RTS, in your opinion?

If we're talking about games that have been well known as eSports or part of eSports history then:
Quake
StarCraft
CS 1.6
Melee
Street Fighter(3?)

As for state of eSports right now:
Dota 2
StarCraft 2

I'd say these are generally the "hardest", in the end it's mainly the old games from then that took a lot of skill. It's a shame that most games played nowadays cannot compare as much to what it was like.

imo it has to be an rts, probably brood war. Dota players also all think their game is the hardest so I would assume at lot of people think that's the hardest.

It depends really. The standard answer I would go for would be Starcraft: Brood War because the level of play was so high and the micromanagement required because of the poor AI was ridiculous. And there is literally no downtime in a game. Any time you spend not clicking buttons is time you've wasted. The pressure is all on the individual to perform. The biggest difficulty is that everyone at the top level is training 12 hours a day, and you have to match that to have a chance. But RTS games don't really have any level of communication involved and teamwork can qualify as a level of difficulty. It's all individual and that's not something most competitive games right now go for.
