(Unofficial) TF.TV Vanilla TF2 Experience Server

Hey all, after a lengthy discussion I've set up the first iteration of my Vanilla Experience server.

To explain the server simply, this is a dedicated server devoted to being a pub-like experience, however almost all weapons, and all cosmetics, are completely disabled. Additionally, the map cycle of this server is dynamic - each week I'll remove maps that turn out to not be fun, and add in new ones that might. My goal is to have half of the maps be Workshop maps, and half Valve.

The mapcycle is currently as follows:

why are random crits off

they're a good mechanic in pubs

"Critical hits are one of the features that resulted from our focus on pacing. The Critical hits system attempts to slightly influence the highs and lows of the game by increasing the chance of a Critical hit based upon the player's recent performance. In summary, the better you're doing the more likely you'll continue to do well. This helps create those rare high moments where a single player goes on a rampage and gets three or four kills in rapid succession."

Also, why would you allow the Original?

Quick mention/shameless plug, Sunshine works pretty well in pubs - it's spacious and I've played it in such an environment numerous times before. Just bringing it up since it wasn't really mentioned in the other thread or in the map straw poll.

Nice to see another server running at least some rotation with custom maps, though. Will try to play if I can.

I looked in just now; it was empty. Perhaps getting streamers to fill it/setting a time for people to meet would help it in its early days.

I did this, and I knew at least 2 others who tried the same thing, all servers went ded. Hope this one survives. Summoning Enigma to put it on the server list. Summoning streamers to take a break from Overwatch.
I want a good pub even if it's 120 ping.

The whitelist is based on that but it isn't the actual whitelist. Whitelist.tf, for some reason, always enables weapon skins and action items. I've disabled those manually, along with some reskins (pans).

you can manually disable all reskins, but weapon skins and certain action items are enabled by default because they don't affect the game unless certain convars are set or map types are loaded.

Today I'm going to work on getting the server involved with Quickplay.

The following will have to stop happening in order to do so:

  • Class limits have to go away.
  • The player count will have to be raised to 24.
  • Random crits have to be enabled. Damage spread and bullet spread does not.

Additionally, it's unclear to me whether or not custom maps will stop it from entering Quickplay. If I'm reading their wiki correctly then players won't be shuffled in from Quickplay while the server is on a custom map, but after the map changes to a Valve map Quickplay players will enter again, and they'll stay for the transition to a custom map (if they choose to do so).

How are the player counts on average right now? The most I've ever seen was 8 players in the server, so I think Quickplay might be the solution.

EDIT: I've found some more up-to-date information. Maps from the Workshop are supported if the player opts in in the Quickplay menu. However, random crits have to be enabled, which is a pretty big issue. I'll continue researching and experimenting to see if this is accurate.

You may not be able to enter QuickPlay since you're blacklisting cosmetics:

TF2 Quickplay OverviewModifications not allowed in quickplay
  • Granting or modifying economy items, or taking actions that devalue players' items, or interfering with the TF2 economy

You can have random crits disabled as long as you don't remove the nocrits tag, but then players will have to choose to play on nocrits servers for them to join your server via QuickPlay.

You may not be able to enter QuickPlay since you're blacklisting cosmetics:
