this is a hot topic at my hippie university. what are your thoughts on this? and would you consider christmas as cultural appropriation? should we stop celebrating christmas if we aren't christian?
just let people do what they want dude why do u gotta butt in on everyones business

Lots of people benefit economically from holidays, it creates communities (though not always beneficial) and unity. There's not too much sanctity to holidays as it stands religiously I feel.
the reason i brought up christmas is because people get overly sensitive when it's about race and all logic goes out the window because offensive. i'm talking about cultural appropriation in general, not specifically christmas.
a bullshit sjw concept that should be laughed at when people say it unironically

i agree but can you elaborate more on why you think it's bs?

I wanted to blow my brains out when I found out people take this topic as anything but a joke.

"People are just looking for a reason to be offended by anything they can find," said Scharf.
Sum it up pretty well.

It's racist to tell people what they can't do because they are a certain race.

Borrowing from other cultures is inevitable and is how we grow and progress as humans. Saying x people can't do/wear/eat whatever because that's a x thing to do is incredibly racist, let alone regressive thinking. Most people actually enjoy when certain aspects of their culture are highlighted because they're sane enough to see that they aren't being mocked, rather celebrated. The funny part is that the majority of people complaining about this aren't part of the cultures being "appropriated."
considereing a good amount of christians only use christmas as an excuse for presents and whatnot, dont see why anyone would get offended by it. go wild dude
Other people think this is bs too?! Holy fuck I'm not racist after all
Culture is nothing if it isn't celebrated and appreciated, regardless of who by. I think the issue is with people confusing "cultural appropriation" with exploitation and cashgrabbing. If you're using stupid racial stereotypes to promote your shit and then claiming "nah bro celebrating the culture its just a social experiment bro" that's dumb and a fair reason for people to think you're an idiot, but people borrowing aspects they like and enjoy and respect from cultures that aren't their own is what culture itself is built upon.
If you wanna be a white atheist with dreadlocks celebrating Christmas with a festive yoga session go for it, it's your life. People can get offended as much as they like, do what makes you happy.
My favourites are the people who get up-in-arms about cultural appropriation and aren't even a part of the culture that's being "appropriated". If you're gonna get offended by something that you feel affects you then sure, but getting offended on other peoples' behalf because you think they should be offended? Really?

I for one am extremely upset the rainbow has been appropriated by the lgbt community, all I want is to be able to fly my fantastic rainbow flag without being judged.
Cultural appropriation can be disrespectful in situations like wearing a native American headdress but theres no reason to get all buttmad about weebs in kimonos
calls something racist
>> native American headdress
which culture bro? the aztecs? the seminole? the aleut?

overally "cultural appropriation" is kind of an overblown issue but its still probably kinda shitty to see your culture get turned into a joke
its more disrespectful than offensive

Fuck "cultural appropriation".
Christmas is for everyone. I don't care who you are. If you want to celebrate christmas, celebrate it anyway you want.

I don't think I've ever actually seen someone get upset about someone "appropriating" their own culture; I've only ever seen college-aged white kids being upset for other people.
you must be upset at things i tell you to be offended by thnx

Read Christmas in the Kalahari and see how Christmas is celebrated by a hunting/gathering tribe in Africa. If these people have a problem with that, I'll be beyond fucking shocked.
What does this have to do with anything. This thread should've stopped at Nursey's point
Stop speaking my people's language poorly, it offends me.
Stop observing my holidays, it offends me.
Stop respecting my religion's rules for eating, it offends me.
These are treated like they are the sole aspects of culture. They're not, but they're what people use as examples to counter this point. The real deal is to respect other cultures. Learn them, don't mock them.

I for one would still love to eat tacos and such while I share my pho with you all. UNITY.
Examples of actual cultural appropriation that kind of annoy people are stuff like white people getting ta moko style tattoos, which are reserved for specifically initiated members of maori culture and lineages.
To deal with that, they've developed a genre of ta moko inspired tattoos which non-Maoris can get which don't violate the taboo...
Iunno. I'm pretty sure that if the members of a culture ask you not to do something because it's very significant for them with regards to stuff like tattoos or rituals, it's polite to refrain from them.

I never said it was racist and tbh i dont know shit about the differences between native american groups. I was just trying to say that for the most part cultural appropriation is no big deal but there are times when it's somewhat understandable for a group of people to get upset. There is a huge difference between eating swanky Asian fusion food and wearing a headdress that is supposed to only be worn by people who have earned it. I dont think it's okay for anybody to be completely outraged over any form of cultural appropriation, but that doesnt mean its wrong for people to want the truly meaningful parts of their culture to be treated with respect.
Anyway, what really bothers me about the whole cultural appropriation outrage movement is that they seem to think that everything foreign is inherently sacred.

Has the problem people have with that anything to do with how Christians feel when the cross or other symbols of their religion are used by, like, rock bands and feminists?
Honest question if the complaint is kinda the same.
