TwistyUntick "Start game and create recording configs", the GitHub page explains everything in more detail if you're having trouble, recording with Lawena works fine for me.

https://github.com/AronParker/AviRecorder

I still have to use the virtual dub part, starting up the AVI recorder is essentially useless because it does nothing.
What am I missing??

TwistyYou don't use this with Fraps, it takes stills outputted from sources demo recorder and turns them into an .avi file without the need of Virtualdub.

"This program allows you to use the Source Recorder with the ease of Fraps."

woops i misunderstood thank you

Before you do a startmovie command you need to press "Start recording" in AviRecorder. Once you finish with the endmovie command you need to press "Stop recording" in AviRecorder. The .avi file should be wherever you set it to save, if it isn't I have no idea. :)

Requires .NET Framework 4.6.2 also

First of all great tool, saves a lot of time.

Suggestion / question: on longer recordings, sometimes the audio goes out of sync slowly. This is because I think TF2 can never record the exact framerate compared to the audio. In Vdub I always used the function to change framerate so audio and video durations match, this fixes the out of sync issue. Is it possible to add this feature in avirecorder?

Iatginkhow do you use this? lawena is broken for me and all F9 does when using this is speed up my game when watching a demo

Just tested it. Seems to be broken, just like Lawena. Had no problems using it before the pyro update.
The game still slows down when recording, but nothing is recorded (it also just plays in slow motion, without the jittery, sound-looping mess that usually comes with avi recorder/lawena) so the recording binds probably don't work anymore for any recording tools

edit: Make a folder in tf and tell the program to put the TGAs in there

Also about it speeding up your game: try the suggested settings first. It'll slow your game down a lot and recording takes a long time but after that you can start figuring out something you're fine with. It probably speeds it up because you didn't make it slow down the game properly in the settings

does avirecorder still work? I tried putting the tga and avi folders in tf but it did no difference.

I'm sorry to bump this thread with such a dumb question, but I'm completely new to recording tf2 (I've only ever used Lawena). I can't even find a way to open the program itself. Can somebody help?

I think this is borked. I might be retard and just not looking where it puts the files, cuz the game slows down and looks like it's recording when i hit F9, but if can't find files in the tga or avi folders i give it. Has it been working for anyone else? I already know my .NET is up to date so that's not it. Maybe it's old demos that mess it up? idk

As some people have said above, make sure the TGA folder is wherever TF2 is set to store your TGA files. You can also uncheck "delete frames after processing" to see if it's actually recording anything.

I personally haven't had issues with the program, but whenever I record stuff I also tend to use HLAE, on top of having my own recording config, so I never actually launch the game/use the built-in hotkeys to record stuff.

Here's what I normally do:

Just launch the game how you would regularly, load up the demo, find where you wanna record, all that stuff. Then in AVI recorder, (make sure "Start game and create recording configs" is unchecked), hit "Start recording."
I have these two binds to start and stop recording:

bind [ "engine_no_focus_sleep 0; r_cleardecals; snd_soundmixer Default_Mix; demo_resume; gameui_hide; startmovie frames_ raw"
bind ] "endmovie; engine_no_focus_sleep 50; demo_pause; demoui"

(All of those commands are what the program normally uses anyway when you hit F9, but if you don't care to fuck with that you can just do this:)

bind [ "demo_resume; startmovie frames_ raw"
bind ] "endmovie; demo_pause"

Make sure you have "host_framerate" set to what framerate you want to record at, and check that it matches in AVI Recorder. Then, just hit [ to start recording, and then hit ] to stop it. Whenever you're done recording whatever make sure to hit "Stop recording" before closing the program to avoid losing anything.

At this point, you're basically just using the program to cut out having to stitch the frames together, but I still use it so I don't have to worry about filling up my SSD with uncompressed picture files, or have to worry about accidentally overriding frames because I forgot to change the name of the shit in the startmovie command. (Which I've done a lot rofl)

I'm not sure if this is 100% necessary or not to get the thing to work, but this is what I've always done and its always worked fine.

If you don't want to do any of that shit, at the very least try having your own recording binds and test it out that way, without using F9 to stop and start the recording.

A quick necro to point out an issue I had, but also fixed. In case anyone else runs into it in the future.
AVIrecorder stopped launching saying "No compatible games detected" or something along those lines

The program makes a txt file "games.kv" in the same folder it's placed in. I moved most of my steam library from my C drive to my D drive a couple months back. Changing the GameDir and Executable to reflect TF2's new directory fixed the issue.
CS:GO's lines remain unchanged so you can see what the issue was before with TF2. AVIrecorder kept checking my C drive for TF2 because of the <library> variable like with CS:GO

Also for anyone who hasn't used this program, it skips having to stitch TGA files together with virtualdub if you record through Lawena. I highly recommend it if you're still using vdub

no matter where i put the tga recording folder (tf folder, inside tf folder, whatever), it does not record and says "StartMovie: invalid path: " in console

edit: if i edit the generated cfg file and take out the filepath and just put a filename, it records fine into the tf folder and the tool works, but i have to edit it each time i start recording
