Originally valve wouldn't give medals for third party paid platforms in the game. It was pointed out that RGL is a paid league with medals so people decided to ask again.
Additionally it seems that valve isn't trying to pretend that ESEA/ESL don't exist anymore as I am fairly sure they advertise their streams in the csgo main menu.

I'm not so sure there should be open / IM medals. This would only encourage more sandbagging and whatnot. I say if you want your medal (and for it to actually mean something) then get to invite and if you want it to be not-green then you're gonna really have to work for it.

i agree that i dont want sandbaggers trying to get open 1st medals, but i do think open needs medals to get the pubbers into esea. the presence of ugc medals has done SO MUCH for that league. it would have literally died without it
People will sandbag more ... to get medals? The only people who really do care about medals are pubbers and people new to the scene, medals won't change anything for the vast majority of people already playing
IMO open and IM should have them just to make get them out into pub servers a little more to try and get more of the playerbase to see esea exists. Playoff medals is probably the best compromise between rewarding players and not incentivizing sandbaggers.

This feels like a really incredible surprise for me. I really gave it my best hard sell and it just did not work at the time lmao. Really happy they're going for it and hopefully they add other div medals because that will get them some new players that might stick around.
