#34 huds.tf in Customization

That's exactly it. omni said he's not going to do the work on adding huds that owners or the public may not want. So until someone (either the dev or a fan) takes the time to fill out the form, they will stay in the archives.

#13 SolanoHUD Trailer in Customization

I wrote you some feedback on the hud modifications thread. http://teamfortress.tv/thread/8247/show-your-hud-modifications/?page=94#2799

Incoming wall...

Solano, the reason you are getting such poor reception to the hud (in my opinion) is because it doesn't look polished at all. It looks like you took an afternoon (I know you've been working on it for awhile) to make this and then came up with the BS marketing stuff for the "features" of the hud.

The only REAL change is the health bar. The ammo looks pretty unchanged aside from position, the charge bars look like they were done in about 15 minutes, and overall, it looks like you don't care. You don't HAVE to use a custom font (there are several huds that use the tf2 font) but generally a custom font is what distinguishes a hud from the very start. Also, in your "trailer", you haven't shown us anything more than bad rocket jumps and the sticky bomb charge bar. You never once showed the scoreboard, damage numbers, the winpanel, or other major parts of a hud. You made us watch 2 and a half minutes of the health bar. While a cool concept, it's not worth 2 and a half minutes ever, and especially not in this form. You should really take some time to design this hud and make it cohesive. Right now I'm not seeing that. Maybe add some color to the hud (as well as a custom font if you want) to make it stand out a bit more.

Now, onto the video. At the end of your video, you had a bunch of weird marketing things like

CLASS INDIVIDUAL IMPROVEMENTS - Every Class has its own needs. SolanoHud has its own special solutions!

To me, this is really weird. I've never seen a hud try to advertise as if it were a TV ad...Also, you never SHOWED the different solutions for each class. You showed stickies, rocket jumping, and huntsman (with a few other charge bars for scout and such). Charge bars do not count as a "special solution" for each class's "specific needs". If you are gonna say stuff like that, you need to really follow through and show us what this special solutions are. On my last hud, it took me 15 minutes to make the itemeffectmeters how I wanted them for each class. 15 minutes of time isn't anything special.

Additionally, I think the strange naming of stuff made people a little hesitant to like it. No one wants to see a hud that is presented as a "trailer". It comes off very pretentious/arrogant. Just post some progress pictures of the different elements that you are finished with if you want to preview it. That's what people have been doing in this thread for months. Having advertising-esque phrases to describe the features of the hud and putting in a video and calling it a trailer rather than an imgur album probably hurt your chances for a positive reception. I did't immediately judge it, but when I saw that it was called a trailer and when I saw the features list, it left a weird feeling for me.

I would say go back, get some pictures of the scoreboard, winpanel, spectator tournament, etc. and post them for people to see. If you haven't made those yet, then you shouldn't be even THINKING about making a trailer for release. Those are three of the biggest parts of a hud and no one will choose your hud if they can't see your customization of those elements without downloading/installing the hud. Also, while I like the idea of the health bar, it ruins the hud as it is. Everything is lopsided, nothing else in the hud looks REMOTELY like that bar, and it's quite distracting. You should put more emphasis on the health number itself because it's much easier to get a definite readout of your health from a number, rather than a bar. I mean, if a pocket knows he wants to have at least 50 hp before he jumps across gran mid to link up with his med so he doesn't kill himself jumping, then your faint little rocket jump ticks aren't going to help. You have to take MORE time to register how much health you have based on those than just looking at the number because it's so different and the ticks are so small.

In summary, go back to the drawing board for the health bar and the hud itself. Make everything cohesive and try to have an overall design ethos as you work on the hud. Have some sort of goal to your design choices. I guarantee that if you have a deliberate goal when you design the hud, it will come across to those viewing the screenshots and they will recognize that you spent a lot of time and effort. Also, you need, need, need to have pictures of the scoreboard/winpanel/other major parts of the hud. Look at any of the other huds on huds.tf and you'll see that their screenshots show you all of those major elements. Your pictures/trailer focus solely on the health/ammo and charge bars and I'm sorry, but that's not really enough to give most people a good look at your hud and what makes it different. I think you have a good start conceptually with the health bar and all; it's definitely unique and if you go back and do it right, you could pull off a really cool hud that I think a lot of people would enjoy. Don't give up, but please don't be complacent with what you have right now.

In short, it's not that good, but it definitely could be.

#14 Player skill rating added to the game in TF2 General Discussion

Agreed. Highlander is what they were talking about to Sal/eXtine forever ago, so if they've decided to actually do matchmaking there's 0% chance of it being 6s. Too different from pubs.

#116 HUD editing: short questions, quick answers in Customization
SkopeAny ideas on how to edit this?

More specifically how to make the ugly brown background disappear.

You're looking for "Notifications_Scroller" in MainMenuOverride.res and NotificationToastControl.res and GenericNotificationToastMainMenu.res in ui/econ. If you open up the vgui_drawtree and go through the different parts within Notification_Panel it becomes pretty easy to see what does what.

EDIT: Just re-read your question. To specifically get rid of that background, you need to change the border in NotificationToastControl from NotificationDefault to NoBorder.

Is there a good way to edit the notification and "new item found" screens? It's hard to only be able to edit it when you get a notification.

SkopeVoloderYou have the makings of an AMAZING main menu. If you change around some of those icons to custom stuff (especially the MOTD icon) you could have something perfect. Looking really good so far.
Ya that icon looks so out of place, I am going to try to figure out a way to customize it. Thanks for the compliment :3

edit: http://puu.sh/aOSlA/90cff745e3.jpg added in new icons for MOTD and Notifications. Do they look alright?

This is great! I just have one issue and that's with the alignment of the buttons. Either align everything on the center or the left/right (I think center is best, but it's up to you). Right now you have the top aligned left and the bottom aligned right and it's unpleasing to the eye (at least mine). Keep working on this because where you are now with the icons changed and the background changed is looking realllly good and I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of skHUD.

Also, as a small side note: This isn't really important because it's not that noticeable, but maybe think about aligning the top section vertically within that white rectangle so that it is as far from the top as it is from the bottom. I think it would look more cohesive that way. Of course, if you do that, you should also lower the bottom buttons so that they are as far from the bottom as the other buttons are from the top.

Having a subforum for each hud is not necessary imo. There's always the thread for the hud here and every hud has a link to the hud developer's steam account or other contact method.

Enigma said he'd add it about a month ago, but I know he's super busy with i52 stuff atm so I'm hoping we get it soon after i52 when his plate isn't so full.

#14 i52 funraiser in Off Topic

As someone suggested, you can take day trips. If you consider it, I HIGHLY recommend going to see Cambridge. The town is beautiful and if you do the punting on the River Cam you get a tour of the whole University via a gondola type thing where you sit and get pushed around. You can even pack a nice picnic. I've done it many times and it was one of my favorite things to do in England.

Here's their pricing info if you're interested. It's relatively cheap and it's great fun.

After you do that, you should still have time to walk around and see the rest of the town and shops and such before you have to go back down to London.
