Hey, I'm looking for a team for ESEA-IM or CEVO-M next season as a fragging class. I can't really argue that I have any experience aside from pugs and ringing, but I'm pretty confident in my ability to compete at this level.
The main problem for me would be availability, until school gets out (late June) I go to sleep pretty early (10-11 EST), but after that there should be no problem.
A season has a number of predetermined matchups, on set maps. Teams can usually play as many matches as they want against as many teams as they want, at the end of some amount of time the "best" team (as determined by ELO or something similar) is declared the winner. Ladders require a lot less commitment to play in, but haven't really worked all that well for TF2 (not since TWL I think).
If you're constrained by price, look for a really low-end pair of audiophile-type headphones and a cheap mic. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 419's that I got for $25 on Amazon and a clip on mic, I can't see why you need more unless you do some serious sound work. Audiophile-tier stuff is really great, don't get me wrong, but the prices get outrageous pretty fast.
