first and foremost: i don't think i'm AWFUL at the game. i'm not the player who just installed the game and baely knows how to WASD. i would describe myself as "competent." but being "competent" != being *good.* a very large majority of the time, i play some games and i just get completely crushed. not even limited to people who are good at the game, on certain days i just get completely and utterly thrashed by some publord playing pyro holding w+m1 into me, with me dying because i missed shots on a person walking in a straight line. that shit utterly destroys me on the inside. i very commonly question my skills and wonder if i'll ever be a "good" player, which is something i want to be. i love this game a lot, and i want to be able to play it at a high skill level. but when i just get steamrolled by people, it's frustrating.
rant aside, have you felt this way before? am i just an emotional sod?

improvement is mostly about how you practice and your mental attitude
having good mental is less about never getting frustrated (although you should try to be frustrated less) and more about moving past mistakes in the moment and then hammering down on them later during review when you have a clear mind
also drop any ego if you have it
all that being said if the game is just pissing you off then its not worth playing, and grinding/improving isnt worth hurting your mental health

if its really that big of a deal u should just play scrims/matches only
a lot of what yr talking about is just random nonsense thats not worth analyzing. if u play bad in scrims u can rationalize what happened and how u can improve
if u just want to "be good" without practicing your options are either get decent and then sandbag or quit the game

Why are you questioning your skill in a gamemode with random crits?
u may want to spend some time doing stuff that isnt tf2, pinning that much emotional weight on your performance in a videogame isnt healthy, especially not when its something like a pub that literally matters to no one but yourself
not that you have to quit tf2 completely to start treating the game in a better way, but its hard to stop caring that much about a game if its all you do

I promise, I don't mean this in a patronizing way, but this is the type of problem that is best worked through with a therapist or psychologist.
What you are describing when you think to yourself things like "I'm never gonna get better" is what's called "Automatic negative thoughts", which suck but are pretty common. Feeling completely crushed inside when u play poorly in an extremely low stakes environment like a pub is a dispoportionate emotional response which I'm sure is very unpleasant. Fortunately, these are things which can be dealt with using DBT (a model of psychotherapy) very effectively.
If you can't afford it or don't want to go that far,, then I suggest looking up some info on DBT. u can Google like "Emotional Regulation DBT" or "Distress tolerance DBT" and you can find some resources to help you combat the reactions you're having, and learn more about what's happening and maybe learn some new skills to address it
What you're describing is common but it's not the way it has to be, and even if you decide TF2 is too much of an emotional trigger for it to be worth pursuing as a dedicated hobby, I can guarantee emotional regulation and distress tolerance are skills which will benefit you in all areas of your life.

you cannot predict pub players man. you are not bad they are just too weird
I remember on the come up I used to be like this too.. not in pubs but in 6s I would get quite emotional (very young, age 14-18) and was really trying to improve at the game. There were days when I thought that I could never get super good. I had this bitch voice in my head saying "you'll never be as good as b4nny or plat or dummy" but I knew that if I kept grinding, kept the emotions at bay, and attack everything and every situation analytically i'd keep improving. I had to ignore the bitch voice and the emotional tilt of not getting the immediate results I wanted.
One of my best friends and mentors, you know him by blaze, a couple years ago he once told me that it's because you think youre not improving that you actually WILL improve. but the thing is, it takes time to improve. it's because you care so much and youre dedicated to improving that any bad result will frustrate you.
But the important thing to remember is to keep everything in your life balanced. if you are getting too burnt out (which will make you more frustrated and drains the mental) take a break and do other things. definitely do physical workouts or exercise it helps so much with mental stress its not even funny.
Im not no therapist or psychologist but learning meditation might also help you manage mental stress and negative emotions. This will allow you to get better at quickly detaching from frustration or negative thoughts and itll reset your mental state to neutral or even positive thinking, which will/can allow you to return back into flow state.
Last but not least, no one likes to play bad. even if you are playing bad in a team situation, being positive / analytical about it you wont bring your entire team down with you. its very easy to fuck up the mumble/team comm vibes if youre frustrated, speaking from first hand exp.
good luck

Only tip I can give is that: As summarized by someone. The importance of aim is overemphasized.
AimIsADickThe importance of aim is overemphasized.
Wrong.

He's not wrong. You can get to div 2 soldier at least when just shooting at walls and floors. Hell even on pocket scout you can do an amazing job and avoid every 1v1.
Its probably better to be more well-rounded, but so many players in this game are all aim zero brain when a bit of boring thinking can save thousands of hours if that's your goal

they arent all aim, they are just zero. well-rounded is good.

i also completely disagree with this. if ur losing ur head while playing to the point u cant rationally think, thats the real problem. u should always question every single death, sometimes even kills. force it to be a pattern. demo reviewing yourself is overrated

as someone whos only redeemable trait is having decent aim i can definitively tell you that aim is very much not the most important aspect of being good

WHY ARE YOU BOOING HIM? HE'S RIGHT

When i'm playing casual tf2 i just feel like im not doing anything. When the round ends i have like 2 kills and 6 deaths. I am improving tho
this game isn't about aim/dm at all
lots of good players get highlighted for being the best cause of their aim, mainly scouts, but that's not at all why those players are at the top. im sure a lot of scouts had aim just as good as clockwork but were much worse than him cause of other factors

Don't worry about stats. Any time I'm doing poorly I just tell myself to focus on playing correctly and the stats will follow. There's always another round for you to have impact in, and in the end, logs only matter for hanging 15 airshots and 500 DPM on your fridge
