This community will die out completely if we continue to let it be ran by people who don't play the game or don't actually care about being a part of the community besides when they're being edge lords and whiny nerds in random discord vc's (M17). This isn't just for rgl, but for every sub-community. The people we let admin for Tf2CC and newbie cup, the people we let run pug servers, and the people that are known sex offenders, racists, or any other form of unforgivable weirdo behavior being able to play with and around us. I have never been in a community so intent on constantly complaining about how things are, and have always been, without doing anything about it.
This community will die out completely if we continue to let it be ran by people who don't play the game or don't actually care about being a part of the community besides when they're being edge lords and whiny nerds in random discord vc's (M17). This isn't just for rgl, but for every sub-community. The people we let admin for Tf2CC and newbie cup, the people we let run pug servers, and the people that are known sex offenders, racists, or any other form of unforgivable weirdo behavior being able to play with and around us. I have never been in a community so intent on constantly complaining about how things are, and have always been, without doing anything about it.
i played for this team for a few weeks when their main player got banned for "not submitting demos" and i can assure you that when players were doing absolutely EVERYTHING in their power to make sure their games were recording the demo it was happening. there was constant check-ups from the TL asking everybody to make sure that their demos were recorded and constant checks to make sure the demos weren't corrupted or just randomly stopped. crazy that a ringer plays for one match and decides to delete their demo the entire team gets punished and doesn't get to play playoffs! legit it was out of the teams and TLs control, but fuck it right?

Idk how an admin can see that pages of people are being banned because of demo recordings being broken and not decide "hey maybe this isn't working"

Demo checks are pointless when the blatant cheaters are still not banned and likely never will be. Every experience I've had with the admins over rules has been a bad one, and I hope either the leadership changes or the league fully dies off.

Random demo requests force everyone to always have every match demo available, including cheaters. This is by design. The punishment is harsh by design. Having something weird with your game is your responsibility to fix, because if everyone could just say that their PC doesn't let them record demos because they're a super special boy with the first xbox known to man, then cheaters get to have that too. And then the already glacial pace of meeting whatever threshold RGL considers beyond doubt for banning a cheater is going to take even longer because we're going to have even less evidence than we do now. This thread is literally just whining that the system worked as intended. Sorry to hear someone's season got fucked up by a bunch of bad luck, but that's literally just how shit goes sometimes.

Just so it's clear, if you aren't changing level after pre-game scrim and you stay on the same server then it continued recording on to the pre-game demo.

I agree with demo checks in principle but I think there should be some leniency extended for the first season without p-rec. Also, the ringer on untamed's team literally deleted his demo for their 5th demo strike, surely he should just get banned instead of giving the team a penalty? What as a TL are you supposed to do in that situation when you specifically make sure your ringer records his demos, but he just deletes them?

I agree that RGL has problems that need fixing, but I can't stand for direct slander of M17.
M17 doesn't play the game because he spends all his time doing shit for the community. Back when I started competitive TF2 in late 2022, I was playing Newbie Mixes in order to learn the game, and one of the most frequent coaches there was M17, second only to the head of the group (Rogue I think). He was there week after week, constantly giving advice to new players and helping them grow.
After I grew out of Newbie Mixes, because of a friend we had that became friends with M17, M17 then started also privately coaching our team. He spent countless hours reviewing shitty demos of scrims and trying his absolute hardest to give advice on how to help us grow as a team and as players. At the time (in a pre-mapreview.tf era), his map talks were the only modern low-level talks we could find on YouTube that gave us vital info on how to better position ourselves and how to react to plays.
His continued guidance helped us immediately jump into IM and place 11/22 in our very first season of RGL. WIthout him, I don't think we could've even scratched the top of AM. He even went above and beyond and kept on coaching us into our next season, providing personal demo reviews for each of us and giving us resources on who to contact in the event he felt he couldn't give the best advice.
During all of this, he's STILL coaching other teams and STILL doing Newbie Mixes every Friday; he was genuinely a total workaholic. He put that addiction to work towards TF2; trying to schedule a demo review was difficult because he also had other teams he was coaching on top of other community stuff he was doing. He spent way more time reviewing demos than actually playing the game ON TOP OF also going to college ON TOP OF still doing all the shit I mentioned previously. Oh, and he helped run the Newbie Mixes Team Drive at least twice.
I say all this just to highlight how much of a fucking godsend M17 was for us and for many others in kickstarting RGL careers (and this is just my limited perspective of his work). To say he doesn't care about the community just doesn't line up with everything he's done and everything he continues to do.
But I also don't blame you for having this perspective as most of the interactions I've had with M17 from him speaking as an admin have been negative. Most of the cases usually boil down to him sticking to the rules too rigidly or needlessly involving himself in a situation that didn't require his involvement. He also can be excessively negative sometimes.
But TL;DR, it is just incorrect to say that M17 doesn't care about the community. He doesn't play the game because he puts all his free time and energy into the community. He's done more for this community than I can even recall and probably continues to do even more. Your impression of him does have some validity to it, but it doesn't recognize all the hard work he's done and continues to do. RGL and its admins do have many issues and some of them need to leave, but singling out M17 here is unjust.

He is also the only one who I've seen who does not show favoritism towards his friends. I've seen every other division admin do that besides him.
One thing I do feel is bad is the admin selection process at rgl. Ive seen/heard from multiple different admins over the years that it's just a text channel and if one of the current admins doesn't like the person they object and the application gets denied. I've heard from ex-admins that they wished they had more power or could suggest different things but they feel like it's just an echo chamber of Dolphin + whoever the head 6's admin is. There should be better criteria for what is necessary to be an admin and it should be based on whether or not a person can take responsibility and act professionally, not whether or not the people who exist there right now like the person or their opinions on the game.

TBH I have so little trust in AC at this point to determine people are cheating before a season is ruined I would almost rather them just scrap the random demo shit altogether and only demo request ppl who are suspected of cheating.
Personally I think you can understand why RGL does random demo checks and also simultaneously think that the proposed benefits have not stopped cheaters from ruining seasons and accept the alternative of giving cheaters a tip off so ppl don't get rando banned for being dumb. Especially since most ppl getting banned are lower div/newer players by the looks of it, I'd rather there be as little barrier to entry as possible. Entirely reasonable viewpoint to hold IMO and one I find gradually more appealing the more OMG threads pop up lol.

Did you read OP? They literally cut a player, I have no idea if they did it because of not having demos but like...what else do you expect them to do lol. TL can't hack your teammates computers; the only way this could've been avoided is if they cut untamed as well after failing the first demo check and you can't seriously tell me that's a reasonable thing to do as a TL lol.

Personally I think you can understand why RGL does random demo checks and also simultaneously think that the proposed benefits have not stopped cheaters from ruining seasons and accept the alternative of giving cheaters a tip off so ppl don't get rando banned for being dumb. Especially since most ppl getting banned are lower div/newer players by the looks of it, I'd rather there be as little barrier to entry as possible. Entirely reasonable viewpoint to hold IMO and one I find gradually more appealing the more OMG threads pop up lol.

TBH I have so little trust in AC at this point to determine people are cheating before a season is ruined I would almost rather them just scrap the random demo shit altogether and only demo request ppl who are suspected of cheating.

Also, are we even sure that the in game demo shit has reasonable reliability? This game is filled with fucking spaghetti code in all parts feel like the demo recorder shouldn't be exempt. getting 4 failure to submit demos is wild even with prec being dead now but why the fuck does a ringer not submitting a demo count for a penalty for your own team instead of just individually punishing said player????

huge grey line in the ruleset for how ringer demos apply to penalizing the ringer themself or the team entirely, imo the team should be granted an exception for this one and the rule's application to this scenario should be more clarified in the rulebook for next season
also huge vouch for m17 he does a lot more work than the other admins. doesn't care about community perception of him. he's someone who does things by the book and DOES NOT do things out of self interest in gaining favoritism. though some decisions are questionable but at least it has good intent behind the actions

because in the same way you decide who is on your team and you must trust them to be accountable, you decide who you ring for a match and must trust them to be accountable

Demo check failures need to be strictly punished in order for cheaters to not just say "sorry don't have em" and get a slap on the wrist over and over. I can understand maybe like 2 weeks of amnesty for whenever the P-Rec breaking update happened but if you failed to record after that it's just sincere skill issue. Also, don't delete your demos after the season that's been policy for ages. I hope you don't need babying this badly.
