in this day and age when selling names, phone numbers, or email addresses or "leads" as those in the field would say is a multi million dollar business, everyone has an incentive to include malicious software that will transfer your personal information, I think its something 30% of android games and apps had some sort of information logging...

Since many will be like me and not read it, i shall say what this url contains. This bill was introduced into the house on May 14, 2007 and was passed in the house on May 22, 2007. It was subsequently dropped in the senate. So this IS NOT AN ACTUAL US LAW.

I did a little research after replying earlier and found this. Looks pretty cool, I used to use the Comodo Firewall and didn't have any complaints. Looks like the browser comes with a free optional VPN (for every application, or just the browser... your choice). It looks like it's just Chrome but edited, similar to what I linked earlier.

Despite transferring over virtually everything from chrome, it seems to be having plugin compatibility issues, as they aren't running. I've only spent five minutes on it so it could very well be that I missed an option somewhere, i'll edit this post with what I find.

edit: I guess you just need to reinstall certain plugins. some work off the bat, others don't :(

Which is not completely applicable here since they are talking about "electronic communication hardware" and some wiley lawyer could portray computers as instead electronic computational hardware or something. If this is wrong correct me though.
EDIT: Oh nvm its not hardware that they are offending it is a SERVICE. I'm pretty sure this doesn't apply then. But I am no legal expert.

thank you for that. now upon looking at the wikipedia link this states that this act protects computers that are:

exclusively for the use of a financial institution or the United States Government, or any computer, when the conduct constituting the offense affects the computer's use by or for the financial institution or the Government; or
which is used in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce or communication, including a computer located outside the United States that is used in a manner that affects interstate or foreign commerce or communication of the United States...

So it still does not apply in this as I'm sure none of our computers are parts of a financial institution, unless they are somehow? Still no legal expert.

The law seems to not only apply to government-owned or traditional financial institution-owned computers, as you can see in the cases involving Sony and other companies.

If there is ever prefect timing for tf.tv to make a pay league, now is most definitely the time.

I am just attempting to understand the situation. I think I am done though. I just want my point to be that people are just throwing out laws and stuff saying that they show ESEA breaking federal law, when really no one here knows what they are talking about, including myself.

Big stuff soon. I'm not involved directly, but they've got a ton of TF2 servers set up (I'm helping them with configs/rules/etc) and getting them in contact with a few prospective admins.

In what fashion would bitcoin mining capabilities be an "exciting new tool to the community"? If someone wanted to mine bitcoins why wouldn't they just download it themselves?

I believe they expanded on that idea in one of the threads, essentially the user could "opt-in" to mining bitcoins knowing the value would be added to the league prize pool, essentially adding more money to the league.

No, they couldn't really. Bitcoin mining requires a lot of computing power. So much so that the only way to be profitable is to have a network of people doing it. The theory is that ESEA was experimenting with an opt-in system to create a network like that, but the miners were maliciously placed into the public client.

Yes what happened was wrong, and yes it sucks that the biggest NA TF2 league was responsible. The legality still seems up for debate, but I think it's safe to say that ethically it was wrong of them.

But they have identified the employee responsible and are doing all the right things to correct the problem and compensate the players. I know some of you are sour with ESEA for other reasons, but don't let this be your excuse to just rip on them. As others have said, only one TF2 match occurred during the mining, so it barely affected us.

I havent been keeping up with this much but has anything been said about the discrepancies between what lpkane originally released about this and then what eventually came out as the truth? was he lying, trying to cover it up or just misinformed?
