Check out the soundtrack to The Harder They Come. Great stuff.

Rebelution and sublime are good reggae/rock bands. If you want to ease in to reggae and not dive straight into peter tosh, these are good choices.
SOJA is another great reggae rock band. Tribal seeds are pretty good as well.
I liked the song "King without a Crown" by the Jewish Reggae singer Matisyahu. Haven't bothered listening to anything else though.
For something chill

Not a huge aficionado, and haven't sought out anything interesting in the last few years, but I occasionally enjoy some roots reggae and 70s dub.
These are the songs I hold in highest regard:
The Congos - Fisherman

Augustus Pablo - Natural Way

Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters - Dread Lion

Dadawah - Run Come Rally

Which is technically nyabinghi I guess

Jah Sun and Clear Conscience are both pretty good, although not roots.

not really reggae but it kind of is
I used to listen, when I was a little man, these guys

The lyrics are beautiful and the sound and rythm are p chilled.
*This song was made by the singer ('Kike' Neira) and it's dedicated to her daughter (Antonia), showing to her how much she means for him and his feelings for being her father.
**I'm not a fan of reggae, but there are sometimes we really need good vibes :).
