I've been using Direct Hit recently everytime I play soldier. Just wondering, is it possible to become really good with this weapon, or is it just inherently worse than the stock RL? Also, does shotgun or gunboats work better with this weapon on roamer?
I really like this weapon. A lot funner than the stock RL.

I thing a lot of soliders prefer the option of splash of stock RL if they miss their directs.

I was told that if people managed to actually practice with it (like hit almost every shot with it), it'd be pretty beneficial to switch to it full time - but online especially splash damage is much more reliable and easier to land with.

You lose your spamming ability completely with the direct hit, which is actually a pretty big deal. Also at close range against a scout it is kind of a 50/50 chance of getting the kill or not.
So you gain really nice single target damage if you hit the rocket, but very little to none at all if you miss.

I don't think there's a single soldier good enough with the direct hit to justify running it full-time
in a situation where airshots are not just likely, but hugely beneficial (holding the pt on viaduct, trying to take the roof on gpit as blu), it is useful, but other than that EVERY soldier in the game NEEDS to rely on splash rockets at some point or another

Two things. Yes, spamming ability is indeed decreased, but it's still pretty huge. The DH has like 30% of the regular RL's splash, so I've found that I can still spam relatively well, although nowhere as well as with the regular RL.
As for fighting against scouts. I dunno which RL has the advantage. I think that when playing against good scouts, most soldiers don't rely as much on splash damage. Also, since you only need to hit them once( since the DH does up to 140 at close range), it's a small advantage.
Also, there's been several situations where I'm fighting two scouts, both at full health. And then I one shot them both.

shotgun > gunboats when using dh (and in general), but i don't think dh is good enough of a weapon to be used all the time.

definitely not true, if the scout has good movement, the best soldier in the world will have to use splash SOMEWHAT

The DH is mostly just a situational thing. Even if you're really good with it you're going to be unable to fight multiple targets as effectively as you'll want to. It's also going to be incredibly difficult to fight a scout - unless you completely surprise him (and even the the standard RL would do just as good).
I like using it on GPIT because teams sometimes run sentries and heavies (easy to hit and kill with DH). Also you can just stand on the roof and reliably keep people on the ground.
Last pushes are another time when DH can work out because again, people tend to run heavies and sentries, and it can make your last push pretty simple if your roamer was able to get into position with a DH and drop 2 rockets on a lvl 3 gun or 3-4 (depends on range and focus) on a heavy.

its like solid snake going charge and targe, no traps but he gets alot of single target damage.

if somebody made a dh that came out of the center of your screen it would be incredible
its definitely not like going charge at all, you dont turn into some unkillable tank when buffed
you get some obnoxious frags on scouts/bombers, have a lot less map presence/control because your choke spam pretty much nothing and then die to 1v1s youd NEVER lose with a normal rl

When a soldier fights a scout in scout-favored terrain where the scout can bounce around on props and never touch the ground, then he may as well have the DH (or just use shotty). When a soldier fights a scout in soldier-favored terrain, aka somewhere flat or a choke, splash lets the soldier win the fight with a consistent 2 shot all the time. Using the DH will let you win some fights you wouldn't, but it also takes away the ability to camp somewhere like badlands house and guarantee that you will block or kill a scout.

pocket requires you to be able to do reliable damage so nope
roam generally holds areas that greatly benefit from splash so nope

Yes. I've found that that's one of the hugest disadvantages with the DH. You fight a lot worse on flat ground, esp. on long distance fights.

Yes, occasionally you do miss really easy kills, as in, a soldier is walking around oblivious to you behind him, and you miss all your rockets. But then, you win fights you'd never win with a normal RL either.

Ye this, but basically I heard from the grape vine that Seagull thinks that if one were to get good enough with it, it would prolly be a straight upgrade. IDK if he actually thinks that or not, but it was from a reliable friend of his so I dunno.

steelfirez(•ᴥ•)|Commft: seagull, what do you think of the Direct Hit?
A Seagull: might be viable if i took like 4 months to get good at it
A Seagull: but otherwise, not good
steelfirez(•ᴥ•)|Commft: so if somebody ran it full time
steelfirez(•ᴥ•)|Commft: would it be decent?
A Seagull: maybe
A Seagull: they'd need perfect shotgun
steelfirez(•ᴥ•)|Commft: for scouts?
A Seagull: for everything, ya
A Seagull: so the only person i think who could do it would be like plat
A Seagull: or tlr
A Seagull: right now
steelfirez(•ᴥ•)|Commft: ok
I wonder how good TLR or Plat is with the DH right now...

tlr couldn't airshot 3 people doing the yukon jump at the same time with the dh what a trashcan

Weapon is too ping dependent. Coming out .1 second late will make you miss a lot of close range shots (if you get into the habit of shooting feet, always fun when they jump and you miss. Aim for waist up if you can get into the habit).

DH is worse than RL for pocket because it's harder to force ubers and it's nearly impossible to force uber splitting. Pockets need to be able to perform these tasks without fail 100 percent of the time. Which would you rather have in hand when you pop in and there's a random dumb-ass scout near the enemy combo?
DH is worse than RL for roamer because it's harder to bomb medics, especially when most of you don't use shotgun. Additionally, like Sigma said, you can't really hide in a cramped space and pull a Jaeger with the DH.
Roamers who have good aim (i.e. Relic) can whip it out on Gpit.
The moral of the story is RL gives you easy, guaranteed damage against multiple targets simultaneously. Two hurt scouts capping your base and you have DH equipped? Congratulations, you just lost your team the round.
