whoops, i'll fix that
and yeah, i got into hiphop listening to nas, kendrick and kanye, illmatic is the bomb

Nice stuff Waldo!
Edit: And you listed the best Sithu Aye song!
I mostly listen to Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, DEVO, and Pain of Salvation when I game.

Oh man, this is going to be a field day. (Good thread and all that)
I'll give a few main ones, along with a chosen favorite (if I had to choose and also get you to like it enough to find your own favorites) of each.
Ratatat, Dirty Art Club, Flying Lotus, Siriusmo, Tame Impala, The Flaming Lips, Hot Sugar, Captain Murphy (Flying Lotus's rap alias), MF DOOM, Crystal Castles
and this Notorious B.I.G. oddball remix
It's an assortment of genres, and doesn't encompass my whole range of music I enjoy, but it's definitely a good sampler, especially for the recent time. I hope you find someone you enjoy as well.
For fear of overwhelming, I'll stop there (damnit I added more). Any videos with actual visual content that's not a loop are worthwhile watches IMO, but I appreciate every one with just pure audio to the highest degree, so don't feel the need to watch them.
I feel I've made my contribution, and so I don't need to post later again, here's my full chosen assortment of songs I listen(/ed) to, for about 3 years' playlist building time.
I'm looking forward to finding new music from you all as well. One of my favorite things to do.
PS: If you state broad genres, please link a song...if I know the genre, I get to see your specific taste, and if I don't know it, I get to hear a chosen sample you get to present me with, so please do!
Also: why oh why link a high pitch version of College Dropout? (which, great album, thirded)

I figured for the sake of brevity I would separate my metal recommendations from my others
Angra
Opeth
Sonata Arctica
Symphony X
Wintersun
It pains me to limit this list to only 5 bands and 5 songs, but let's be real here, nobody is going to listen to all these as it is.

I made this instrumental hip hop playlist on Spotify to play TF2 to and then a bunch of people also liked it.
Depending on which tracks spotify pulls from the catalog it's got around 500 tracks.

I usually listen to albums all the way through by artists that I discover or just learn about by recommendation. I'm at a point in my life where I just pub on tf2 as something to do while I listen to new stuff. I've got a literal music backlog that I don't think I'll ever catch up on. I don't really like making online radio stations or putting old music on shuffle as much as I used to.
Most of the music I have is indie pop/rock/folk, but I have a lot of electronic music (mostly synthpop, triphop, or chill out stuff), alt rock, funk/soul, and tons of dad rock as a direct result of growing up around some awesome parents (the who, pink floyd, led zep, the doors, chicago, queen, etc etc). I have a lot of soundtracks to musicals that I listen to but not when I'm playing games.
I also fucking love almost everything that came out of the Elephant 6 Recording Company. Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster are two of the best musicians ever to live.
No one is asking for lastfms but here's mine anyway.
I've been awfully hung up on Mac Demarco's newest album, Salad Days, lately. Here's my favorite song from it. This album and the one before it are pretty amazing chillout/slacker rock music if anybody here is into that.

If I'm playing normally then I like some upbeat stuff, a bit of electro swing, a bit of rap, a bit of indie, a bit of 80's/90's alternative, an an odd mashup thrown in here and there. [I actually just downloaded this electro-swing mix earlier today and it's fun to play with] If I'm surfing or whatever, I like some more calm stuff, light jazz, classical guitar, instrumentals, soundtrack stuff, or chillhop.
A few artists I've been playing a lot are Pink Martini, Tycho, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deluxe, Ratatat, Phantogram, Lemon Jelly.

i try to get as indie as possible. i usually go on youtube and look for bands with under 10k views and listen to them so i can feel superior over everyone who hasnt heard of them.
the amount of people that thought i was serious top kek
