Minecraft - you can even let him go online since it's filled with nothing but 5-12 year olds and/or MLP fans
there are some good PS games, if you're kid likes lego, try one of the lego star wars games, they atleast used to be my fav game. or any other lego gam,e
Hearthstone isnt bad, if they are into it. It can teach them a lot about arithmetic and logic. Its also not fun whatsoever, so they might not pick it up.
Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers
Super Meat Boy
Starbound
Papo & Yo
Fez
Cubeworld
Portal
World of Goo
Terraria
Legend of Zelda
Pokemon
Dungeon Defenders
Psychonauts
Braid
And you can always install tf2 and change all the settings that way so there is no gore or violence (for example disable online and let the kid play jump maps, surfing etc)

The Longest Journey
Machinarium
To The Moon
any form of puzzle game is generally good. That should keep them busy for a while :)

I don't think To The Moon would suit little kids very well.

Any particular console in mind? Or are you looking for good PC suggestions?
Scribblenauts is a really fun kids game that older people can also get involved with, and is available on a fair few platforms (I know of a PC, Nintendo DS and an iOS version).

Ehh, there's a few parts where it could get kinda bad for kids. I think after you beat the first or second boss, a ton of squirrels (or something similar) die in a somewhat brutal fashion, lol.
Only suggestion I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet is the BIT.TRIP RUNNER games. Pretty straight-forward and a lot of fun.

Machinarium is a wonderful game, bonded with the most recent girl I dated whilst playing that collectively, a very good story and the artwork I've become addicted to. I would strongly recommend for any and all children.
If I'm not mistaken to the Moon is one of the saddest games I've come across recently haha. Good for teaching kids life lessons perhaps. Absolutely beautiful still but I should really finish it. O_O
