Cool_Breezewhy does tf2 struggle to get 4 teams to lan every season? but then games like css get 8 there easily?
1.6 has 4 teams going, cs:go has 4 teams (one of them being 3-13 that is filling in), cs:s has 5 (2 of them being teams that didn't actually make it). none of them were able to get 6 this season and yet tf2 got 4 easily.

it costs 120% more to send a tf2 team than to send a CSS or 1.6 team. The talent pool is also 20% more concentrated among the top teams.

yea tf2 got 4 teams to lan easily....by asking other players in the community to help pay for their fees

tf2 will never be an esport, wake up from this dream you guys have. valve will never put money into competitions for their games instead they put it into the community and for the casual gamers

TF2 is the most stable league out of all of the ESEA leagues, and it is also the most viewed stream for LAN. While the other leagues have more teams and players, it also has the distinction of being a very crummy community.

It's a sad day when people think the only way for esports to be sustainable is for the developer to pour in tons of money. Valve very recently with Dota 2 and Riot with LoL are the only companies that have ever had success doing this. Where do you think the money was coming from for the last 15 years of esports going all the way back to SC1 in Korea?

Obviously we need to get clothing companies and stuff to start advertising through valve. What's better than a heavy with a quicksilver logo or a soldier with American Eagle jeans in game? Think of the proposed but dropped jersey system that people wanted way back, but with sponsors. Also could have headsets from real companies as hats, SFX machines based off certain company catch phrases, etc.
But as far as which stream gets used, matters 0. Just shitty communication on their parts.

leavesSo wait: this is all just a misunderstanding of Extine's original intentions? How the fuck is this a topic for drama, and why is it happening right now, so close to the event? This isn't even anyone's business but that of the casters. Discuss it together in private like adults, argue for and against the reasoning of Extine with Extine, come to a conclusion that guarantees the only thing the public cares about: that the LAN is casted by these wonderful people and it's a good product. All speculation of potential viewer numbers, half-baked approximations of "the lesson to be learned" by ESEA, or which platform is better for the game needed to happen way earlier, and now they are useful only with regard to the S13 LAN.
this is exactly the problem duder is talking about. people only care about the event being casted and not the future of eXtv. eXtv doesn't seem to provide any value to people. in my eyes though, it's a growing fanbase that is currently the ONLY essential, unifying organization that brings all of the casters and viewers together to one place for north american TF2 (oh and yes team fortress.tv but you know what i'm talking about).
alfaI don't get why people who aren't involved in this "conflict" are butt hurt at all
You are benefiting from a FREE service which those people will provide to you regardless of whom they are involved it. And what if seanbud promotes his stream? Are you saying it's wrong that he wants to promote TF2 since his channel consists mostly of TF2 related content?
Whatever the story is behind this (I can't comment on how they handled this situation because I have no idea), I'm glad they took the chance to promote this LAN to a bigger audience.
Regarding Vanilla offering better services, instead of shitting on our casting services which traveled all the way to EU to combine forces with your casters, maybe you could lend a hand and help improve them so everyone can benefit from them.
Also for anyone interested, I will create threads on both ETF2L/TF.TV providing casting information (mumble, etc), STV's, match times and brackets and update them as soon as they are available on ESEA.
from my POV, i'm not saying that what seanbud and co. are doing is wrong. in fact, i'm saying the opposite (go back and read posts). all i'm saying is, it was a win-win for everyone EXCEPT EXTV.
everyone is forgetting what is important here is that yes, sure we did get LAN covered by great casters and the event will probably go without a hitch thanks to their efforts. HOWEVER, we're cutting out our own NA TF2 casting organization in the process. i'm not saying it can be helped. i'm not saying it was the wrong decision. we're simply saying that it SUCKS and that is the point eXtine is trying to make. after all eXtv does for us, we can't even help them in this one scenario to ensure that our NA TF2 casting organization casts our biggest event of the season. It's embarrassing.
last point i would like to make alfa is that someone from eXtv does the Teamfortress.tv info every single time there is a match that is casted by our crew. you'll find it in the "upcoming events" section on the top left of your page and the page itself looks a bit like this

the main issue here is that regardless of what reasoning anyone has for going on esea orange, you're just setting up another esea jew gold hoarding habit. They make enough money to fly out casters and have real coverage. They SURELY have enough money to pay casters if they do it online.
the lack of ambition at that company is mindblowing. they're completely fine with everything going in a circle with a terrible lan at a terrible location with terrible promotion as long as you keep paying your monthly tax. esea is the best we're going to get, but it is really dumb to not hold them accountable for paying due like every other lan event runner does these days.

From all the reading Ive done, Ill summarize the main points from eXtine's view the way they're presented, as well as the points (the way I understand it to be) of the other people involved. This is to try and create an unbiased opinion on the matter.
- eXtv communicates with several casters and prepares to organize a shoutcast crew for the upcoming event. Plans are created, however they are not confirmed at this time.
- eXtv extends an offer to ESEA to shoutcast the matches locally, requesting compensation to help cover costs for travel and other work for the event.
- ESEA declines the offer, asking instead if the same coverage can be done cheaper, or free.
- eXtv counterpoints that there needs to be some form of compensation is needed for those willing to take the time to drop their schedules/travel/cast the event, of which nothing is agreed upon to any final extent between ESEA and eXtv.
- As such, eXtv decides that casting the games off-site is the best resolution to the situation, and begins preparations.
- Upon looking at options for the event, some of the casters decide that casting the event under ESEA-Orange would allow a larger viewerbase in total, helping to grow to community in its own way.
- A lack of communication results in confusion between both parties.
So, to summarize, here is another opinion to throw into the mix:
I think both casters and the companies involved needed to have better paths of communication to avoid a scenario like this. While i empathize with eXtine, after seeing both sides of the story, I dont think anyone's at fault. I dont blame eXtv from requesting compensation when offering to cast the event, its a big undertaking, and hard work should be rewarded. eXtv presented one option, and when ESEA presented the other option, the decision is up to the casters themselves. When the decision was made, anyone involved in the options should have been notified.
They decided to go with ESEA, and thats fine. Ill look forward to the coverage. But I do think eXtv should have been contacted with something like "hey, we've decided that ESEA's option is the one we've decided to do...etc." and at least everyone knows where everyone stands. While it looks unprofessional, there isnt a way to know exactly how concrete eXtv's option stood when he spoke with the casters so in some cases it may have looked like ESEA was the only solid option when ESEA declined eXtv's offer. I think that this should be as far as this needs to go, and I look forward to seeing what ESEA Orange will bring for the event.
TL;DR Everyone just needs to talk to each other more <3

Pretty sure ESEA just wanted to exploit the free offers and save themselves money. And it's honestly what you'd expect a profitable company to do.

the video extine made is completely justified. maybe he could have discussed alone with djc and co about this whole going behind his back. However the community needs to know how hard they are getting fucked over by ESEA.

Solution is abstract and costs money, but relatively easy. Jeff doesn't get paid because TF2 is essentially unwatchable. It's like poker before holecard cams, accessible only to cognoscenti. Yet everyone agrees it's the funnest game ever. The solution is bridging that gap. Currently, casts are carried by the energy of a few people, but they'll get real lives and be replaced by a few others. There is no direction there, there is no 'good for the community'. You tell Valve that you're hiring someone to write a spectator client and ask for their plans in that regard. You make something people can watch and advertisers can buy that doesn't rely directly on your own energy. I know nothing about LoL but Twitch numbers alone tell me that plenty of people's fulltime jobs are supported.
Or stay with the drama and monkey power hierarchies.

I'm pretty sure it's not misinformation to say that ESEA wasn't willing to pay (less than last LAN!!!) to fly EXTV out for a professional onsite cast.

I honestly don't know any people that started playing this game because of being exposed to it through ESEA. I know that eXtv played a large part in exposing me to it and getting me into 6s comp play. Also I know other people who got hyped from eXtv, Sal, and even other youtube contributors like Star. Also, ESEA, being the superlative league around here, has benefitted hugely from eXtv helping draw attention to TF2 and getting people signed up. Sure TF2 is still nickels and dimes compared to other games, but without eXtv existing it may already have been gone from ESEA.
This isn't about "greed" money but about being just and properly compensated. Looking at this organization it's clear that they have decent money. Obviously as a business they'll try to get as much for cheap or for free (there's always people in India / China willing to work for pennies on the dollar... understandable, but not quite "fair") but the right thing would be to offer some compensation since they CAN. It's a circular problem. They don't want to put any money into TF2 but expect money in return. eXtv wants to be fairly compensated and professional and in return would provide top notch casting, which makes ESEA look good and potentially grows the scene (a win for ESEA as well).
So here's what I gather from what eXtine has said:
-In the past ESEA has compensated casters and crew (both live at LAN or online)
-eXtv offered to go out there if they were compensated (less money than previous times doing it ONLINE ONLY)
-ESEA rejects offer, and agrees to pay less or nothing at all for an online cast. (Or possibly the same amount.. but why would they not pay less AND have eXtv there live then?)
eXtine wants to stand up to ESEA and motivate them to be more professional and supportive of the community as it would benefit everyone involved.

MR_SLINlast point i would like to make alfa is that someone from eXtv does the Teamfortress.tv info every single time there is a match that is casted by our crew. you'll find it in the "upcoming events" section on the top left of your page and the page itself looks a bit like this
Nice I just noticed that, I make those threads every single LAN for ETF2L since they don't have those kind of sections. Thought tf.tv could use it too
And I wasn't pointing at you in particular, I was just saying there is nothing wrong with what they are promoting on there... it's also extv's problem to solve whatever happened and not ours, I'm sure one LAN isn't gonna bring extv down, they will come back stronger and cast the shit out of S13. I was just kind of annoyed seeing people jump on the hate wagon even though they aren't affected in any way.
Enjoy the LAN and don't get queef'd by stuff like this

ESEA paid $500 for the online coverage of last LAN. Price check how much it costs to book plane tickets two weeks in advance from Washington and Minnesota to Texas, and then see how far $500 will get you for a Thanksgiving flight.

I think we have an inability to come to the same terms here
I'm talking about ESEA paying into the TF2 LAN for the professional production and care it deserves, they're a business and if they're not leaking money out their back pockets they should have enough to ship some people out there for one of their biggest events. It's not about the compensation paid (okay, it has to be there, but it's not the subject of this message), but whether ESEA's willing to get Really Good Coverage done or if they're just... Being ESEA.

Just to be clear, the lovely G1 gives me a ton of the upcoming schedule information that I post. :)
alfa: LAN matches and casting info will be in the schedule as they come. If you see any information on those schedule pages missing, you're more than welcome to ping me so I can add it.

What is collective bargaining?
Oh well I guess $500 is enough to buy a weekends supply of weed, cheetos and mountain dew.

Extine has been such a huge factor in expanding the coverage of the competitive community and has put in so many hours of his own time. I'm not going to hold one emotion driven video against him. This is a shitty situation, but in the end I just hope we can can put it all behind us afterwards and keep EXTV filled with high level casters after Lan is over.
