As a "problem drinker" I know I probably won't stop drinking just because I want to, but then again, I don't have any issues with my parents. I also know I'm a fuck-up, and am working toward fixing that.

It's not about the means, it's about the ends. If you have the ability to design websites, network - get SOMETHING as a portfolio for fuck's sake. You can talk and talk, but, since you have access to the internet, SHOW THEM that you're capable of the things you want to pursue. If you wanna be in a band, try out with whatever instrument you play or sing for them, but don't just say you wanna be a rockstar then fart around on youtube watching some asshole do hard cuts and silly voices.

Work is definitely tricky when you don't have transportation, where does your dad work, your mom? Maybe they have some menial job opening and you can carpool until you can afford a vehicle. Otherwise, you may need to explain that you want to get out into the world and will need to borrow the car while working a weird shift in order to do that.
If all else fails, and you're not just being an angsty fuckboy, there are likely places made to help folks like you get out of those situations (missions, whatever).

you're just gonna have to put up with your parents' shit until you can afford to get away from it. if you're not putting forward a shit ton of money toward bills to help your parents, then odds are you can definitely save. save for a bike, then either save for a moped or save enough to live half a year in some cheap apartment. as owl said, whenever you have free time, spend that doing what you love to do and make some extra income from that. eventually you'll get to the point where you can happily live on your own, or even with a buddy and be better off than you feel you are now.

no offense either.. i could guess a lot of people on this forum around your age used to splurge into computer graphics at some point or another. i know i did. we were all teenagers once, and we all had dreams.. then we got older and realized some things just aren't realistic. i bet people wanted to be sports stars, the president, make video games, (make real money off playing video games, lol), etc. you realize though 99.9% of the time it doesn't work, your parents know that but you don't yet. you have to have a more secure plan for your future. you can continue your animation no matter what you decide to do with your life. you can't really expect your parents to allow an 18 year old live at home for free, not work, and play video games 10+ hours a day. any parent who lets their child do that is not being a responsible parent. no matter which way you try to manipulate this, you're going to have to spend the next 40 years of your life working around 10 hours a day 5 days a week. at the least. might as well find something that pays well, is secure, and that you enjoy. whatever that might be. then add animation on the side. eventually you'll get some steady vagina and then all of this will be a good laugh 20 years down the road.

My parents used to go hard on me for not studying enough since my grades dropped from straight As to Cs over the years. I've never really learned school stuff in home or did homeworks after I ended primary school, because for me it's a waste of time and the straight way to having a boring job. I told them how happy I am, that I do care about self-improvement (learned some IT stuff), but nothing that's being taught in school besides history interests me and I'd rather live my life happily than waste it on learning useless stuff to get a well paid tedious job and that I'd rather do something I enjoy for a living and earn just enough to keep myself afloat and go to the cinema once a month or two. Sometimes it helps to shock them to make them realize you are your own man and are capable of taking your fate in your own hands. It did work kind of, they still don't agree with me and they'd rather have me learn about triangles than programming, but they know it's my choice and I know that whatever I do they may complain, but they won't stop me since they trust me. I can be either amazing or miserable following my own path, but whatever happens I'll just be happy I didn't waste my time prior to this date and whatever I achieve will be my own merit.

That's a good suggestion Sal. We've both sold at conventions and made good money. If you want to throw down some money for a table to sell your work, you could possibly earn quite a bit since you have a distinctive style. Maybe even sell some originals too! The thing is, it just takes some investment in your end to get it started [making prints, display stuff, buying the table and badge, etc] and I'm not sure how much you can afford at the moment.

As for your interest in animation, are you talking cartoons? Music videos? Feature film? Video games? I can try to get you some resources on that.

You don't sound like you have too much workforce experience. Truth is, most entry-level jobs are gonna suck. But you can make them better. If you want a job to not suck, you have to bust your ass. Most people are good at what they want to do, but sometimes you have to learn to be good at something you don't want to do just to get by.

For example, I started at my current job by making sandwiches for minimum wage in September, and now I'm in charge of receiving inventory and heading the wine program for the store I work at. It only took me 3 months to get that promotion (with concomitant raise) because I busted my ass every day and volunteered to stay late and got overtime. Managers notice that kind of thing, and when the owners were around, they notice too. If you want your job not to suck, you gotta work. It doesn't matter what the job is, whether you like it or not. Just work hard, and it'll get better.

And avoid paying rent for as long as possible. Don't buy shit because you want it; buy it if you need it. Don't go out every weekend. Scrape and save, and even minimum wage will let you save pretty quick if you're not paying rent.

Thanks for this, I've been struggling with some stuff in my own life but today I realized I have it easy. I don't have a substance abuse problem, I have a (part time) job, I have a car and my parents aren't threatening to throw me out. I have no idea where to go from here but I'm stable at least. Maybe you should work towards be stable, that's really the only thing I could tell you.

When you lie in bed at night think about everything you're worried about: your parents, money to get high, transportation. Work on getting those things fixed. A lot of people might tell you that drugs are bad, they aren't. If you're mismanaging your life because of drugs/alcohol then they are a problem for you.

There's also the issue of you blaming everyone else but yourself. I see this a lot in CS/DOTA/LOL. It materializes in different ways, blaming teammates, calls on hacking. Everything but "I suck".

I urge you to realize that you do suck now, but if you work hard and get your life together you wont suck later.

My first job was a 45 minute drive away. My mom happily drove me every day because she was glad to get me outta' the house. I also had to have her do it because I was only 15 and it was much too far to bike. I assisted a team of lumberjacks cutting trees out of agricultural fallows. Basically, every farming area has patches of trees or other fallow land that they get paid not to farm by the government. Periodically the trees and etc need to be cleared so they can get the tractors and other equipment in safely. I was making 5.15 an hour because that's what minimum wage was at the time and I worked 6 days a week typically, and I didn't have set hours so I basically had to provide transport on demand. Luckily for me I met a guy at work that lived somewhat close to me so after a few days he gave me the hook up on a ride. I made enough working 3 months over the summer to buy my first car - I gave 1.3k for a 96' Grand am GT, and then put about 600$ of work into it (new tires, new rims, general tuning stuff because the last owner had fucked it up in various ways). It's not hard to get a car, you can pry go even cheaper if you know somebody that's handy with cars (a 900$ car off craigslist or out of an auto-rv trader would pry need a lotta' work).

Also, as a guy whose been through the legal system for drinking a few times, it's not worth it, especially with as young as you are, it's only a matter of time before you get caught by somebody who won't simply "send you to rehab" against your wishes. You should be thankful your parents haven't killed you. I know if I got caught drinking before I was 21 I'd have been far too busy being dead to whine about AA - and the same will go for my kiddo as well lol.

First of all I wanna say thanks for being unbanned and sorry for shitposting. But OP first of all your parents have probably done dumb stuff (I doubt sending you to rehab was the best option) but they did it cause they actually care about you. Many people have parents who don't give a shit about their children and trust me that is much worse than having parents who make a few dumb decisions now and again. If you are desperate for weed and/or alcohol I think you need to see someone about it (mostly for the alcohol) because there is nothing worse than being dependent on drugs to be happy. I have bi-polar disorder and ended up self medicating and got addicted to diazepam to help me get through life. This helped at first but in the end it made everything worse and I had to quit before I ended up killing myself (those fucking withdrawals). So I went to see a psychologist and things have began getting a lot better for me. Just don't be mad at them cause they love you and I would recommend seeing a psychologist or something like that with your parents. They need to make an effort to support your career choices and you need to stay away from the drugs.

TL:DR Get your parents to see a psychologist with you, They need to understand what you want to do with your life to be happy (with your career choices) and you need to understand that they do stuff like sending you to rehab because they love you and don't want to see you become dependent on drugs/alcohol.

My parents used to be very much on my case, albeit in a different way, but I felt similarly.

I got a great job and career, and, unfortunately, I was recently laid off.

When I told my dad, he wasn't disappointed or mad at all, he was sympathetic. He knew I can take care of myself and be stable. And, although I'm planning on take a couple months off from employment (I plan on working on game dev and music), he's not worried about it because I've proven to be very financially stable, I don't have bad habits (I don't drink casually nor very often, I'm not a huge spender, etc.), and that I have a desire for results.

I've seen a bunch of your work and it's incredibly impressive, not to mention you've shown ability to collaborate with other people to create stuff for them. What sallpal said is an opportunity you should take. I've been to quite a few cons similar to that (Comic-Con for several years, APE also for several years), and that kind of art really sells (to be honest I'm confused by it but it's not something I know much about).

In my view, what you need to prove to your parents is this: to stop drinking, to show that you're actively trying to save money, and that you ARE making money. owl already mentioned one good way of that (and yes, it'll suck, but the majority of people have to start somewhere). Another you could do is to start selling prints and the like. I think you're capable of doing so, especially if you work on marketing it. Unfortunately I don't know much about selling art.

Literally nothing is worse than doing something you don't want to do for a living. If art is really your passion, you should talk to your parents maturely about it and show them that it's not only profitable, but your dream. Working a 9-5 in some bullshit you don't care about and hate will actually probably lead you to do more drugs to find happiness. Not that I look down on that at all, but if it's something you want to change about yourself, you should pursue your art. Ask them to support you while you cement your art career, pay rent to them if that's what they want by finding even a $9/h part-time job somewhere, and work on what you enjoy.

It's ridiculous that in 2015 people have to be forced into doing something they don't like. Not everyone is lucky enough to pursue their dream, but if you're young there's most of the time no reason not to try. Do what you can while you can. And there's no reason to rush to move out if they're not forcing you out. Save the money.
