Were getting smashed 5-0 every single match, we do well in scrims but something always doesnt click during the match, either 1/2 people have 160 ping, or someone chockes, or someone is sick. Pretty demoralizing when you know you can do better as a team

I'll admit that you were right, and i apologize. It definitely came off that I was blaming you. And I'd like to clarify that both parties mentioned were subs. While Kevin leaving was very unfortunate given what happened with the match, I was genuinely annoyed with stevo, leaving without warning, and saying my team was negative and toxic because we didnt think we could find a process scrim on sunday night. I had to pull lazy out of his HL scrims so we could have 5 people in the server, which even then wouldnt have been enough if the other team had decided to show up. Lucky break on our part, I guess. I dont mean to try and portray my team as the negative and toxic group stevo thought we were. We're just some friends that love this game and want to play at a higher level.

I'm on Roamer because Marcato and ESEA's routing clashed, and having my first season on Roamer be in Open is pretty rough tbh

Honestly, we've been so used to doing so well in UGC matches and scrims that this is entirely new to us and we're not sure how to handle it. Every match is an 0-5 roll. I think we've finally realized our team has no idea how to play real competitive TF2. Are we improving? We don't seem to find much team to scrim and go over demo reviews together because of school and work so that's probably an indicator of a probably not. ESEA takes up a lot more time than UGC because of the whole two matches a week and increased number of scrims. No one really wants to sacrifice their priorities to play TF2 and that's completely understandable. We're just gonna keep feeling this season out and hopefully later get matched with teams our skill so we can have maybe a couple good games. The only reason why we're not breaking up as a team is because we're all really close IRL friends. Also, ESEA servers suck and hopefully will be fixed soon because they're not making it any better lol.
I play demo and the demo nerf also was unhelpful. Our combo was our main powerhouse and it doesn't feel the same anymore.

My team (1-3) has gotten beaten 0-5 every game and one forfeit win. Our first two 0-5's were pretty rough but the third 0-5 felt much better as weird as that sounds and we felt real improvement. We had chances to take a few rounds and just goofed. My team has played together for a while now in the lower leagues (ugc iron-plat)) and we're kinda bad but we have lots of fun together so we're in for the long haul and hope to keep improving little by little. I feel bad for the ffw I'd rather get 5-0'd
Hopefully I can adjust to the demo nerf. I feel like I've been playing outstandingly bad.
edit: if any other lowish open teams wanna scrim or something hit me up!

My team's off to an undesirable start.
http://play.esea.net/teams/91922
Our first match was a loss, with the two following being forfeit losses because our Pocket was asleep, and I was asleep the following match (schoolwork hit my sleeping schedule hard). We picked up a win with our most recent match which greatly helped morale, arguably, as we're challenged in most of our scrims because of coordination issues - likely due to "playing musical chairs with the roster" at the last moment before the season started for a number of reasons. While 1-3 with two FFLs is an undesirable start, and it's likely we have no chance at improving rapidly to the point where we can make playoffs as originally hoped, we're still managing to have fun through it all; everyone seems to get along, and is generally positive. It's great to be around these guys for that reason alone.
It's going to be tough, but this season will be entirely about seeing how we can improve considering former goals versus reality.

I've been playing on a scrim team for a few months now and would place us at about low open.
So, for any low open teams using irc, keep a look out for a "fruit" or "fruitman" in irc. We play on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday from 9-12pm est. But, like any of you, we are improving ourselves and may just break out of that low open bubble!
I am also a back-up for this team. And, as of tonight, they are in need of a main scout! They are a really nice group of people who just needs a player who will grow with them as they embark on their first season of ESEA. More info here.

6DOOBS' season is going rocky. We're the team that couldn't get paid up, and had troubles finding demos.
Anyways, the biggest issue is that currently our demo has no internet. For our match last night, the other team was kind enough to limbo between servers for >30 minutes so we could figure our situation out, and our sub was able to hop in at the last moment. However, he's multipurpose, and certainly on the lower end of demos in Open currently. We all know it, and that's ok. He's our friend, we're happy to have him. We are, however, looking for a demoman, and that's a rough position to be filling halfway into existence with the team.
However, we won our match last night, and are looking forward to moving into the next week's map.
Scrimming has been tough to organize, especially with a few players being on Highlander. I'm a bit of an ass when it comes to that, and it still doesn't make sense to me why Highlander is viewed as more important to 6s to some members of the team. It comes off as lack of dedication to an extent, considering we've had a similar roster for the past 3 seasons. I understand it can be planned around, and I understand people want to dedicate some time so it can be more fun when they're playing matches, but: I think 6s scrim time is much more important for building better play than the pub experience on steroids scrims. Please read that on the constraint that it is a problem if and only if the player is splitting time between 6s and HL. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please, shoot.
Aside from that, I would say our game has improved drastically over the past few weeks. It may just be that by now we've caught a feeling for each others' play, because I would agree that it isn't the paid league factor that got us to focus harder. It's the dedication, in my eyes, and it is truly something that boosts morale across the team. We raise each other up with it.
Re: Scrims - we are down to take pretty much everyone in scrims, as we feel both losing by a nice margin, and winning by a nice margin, can be helpful to both us and the other team. Generally, either Simplicity or Zairuen (Zren) will be in IRC looking for scrims Tuesday-Thursday nights, 9-11pm EST. We're definitely looking for consistent scrim partners around the same level, and not only that, but we hope to foster a learning attitude among both teams (i.e. the willingness to rerun mids, or play two scrims with the same team).
Good luck everyone! We won't be seeing you in playoffs, but I hope our encounters are enjoyable and fun for all, and may your season of Open have been worth it

Following up with what drak says, balancing 6s scrims with a couple of HL players on the team is a massive challenge - anyone with good advice on how to deal with it and still scrim effectively - I'd love to hear it.
Also, while I'm posting here - I'm pretty sure that a bunch of people posting in this thread are on teams that would qualify for the UGC->ESEA challenge prize. There are about 8 teams in it, but there have to be some more that are eligible but didn't apply.
I said I'd cut off applications at the end of week 2 of the ESEA season but I've been pre-occupied with other stuff and never chased for more applicants.
So, if you think this thread is talking to you/your team, hop on over and consider applying. If you talk with me on steam/PM me on the forums by Wednesday night, I'll extend the deadline for you. I know the "rules" are a little wonky, but if you're all/mostly brand new, you're probably eligible and it will definitely give your team something to play for in the back half of the season.

I feel as though we are ever closer to the cusp of getting our shit together. After a dismal process week in which we managed to scrim a grand total of almost once, we finally got a few scrims for metalworks where we were able to win quite handily (And I managed to drop 0 ubers this time around :P). So rubber-banding and 300 ping spikes aside, we're feeling pretty good despite being 1-3.

sallpal i was in esea limbo for a week after chilling on my friends' team to boost their player count on jan 5th. one name change every 30 days??
Big thanks to salpal for saving my team, we owe you a lot.
As a new team captain, I've made a lot of mistakes in the past three weeks -- struggling with ESEA rostering, finding scrims with the IRC client, working the schedules of 6 busy gamers -- but hey, trial by fire? That's the best way to learn, as long as you stay open-minded to criticism and suggestions for improvement. And I am extremely fortunate to be with the Platinum Level Spectators for another season, I couldn't have asked for a better group of friends to play tf2 with. No, we haven't won a match yet. Yes, we've been improving every scrim. And yes, we're having an excellent time.
The only issue I have is with the way low open teams are treated on the IRC. We're not an opportunity to use to troll with a BM scrim. You were all there once- would you have enjoyed seeing two snipers and an engineer at mid? How would've you felt? I have a growing list of blacklisted teams on my scrim notes.
Besides that, we're having a great time in Open. Being rolled is does not kill morale; morale declines when a team does not perform to its expected potential. However, persevere, and figure out how to fix those mistakes the next day in scrims. Practice effectively.
All in all, we have no regrets. Stay positive everyone!
FrostingI am also a back-up for this team. And, as of tonight, they are in need of a main scout! They are a really nice group of people who just needs a player who will grow with them as they embark on their first season of ESEA. More info here.

Glad to see new players not afraid to lose. Getting smashed your first season is like a right of passage for those brave enough to face a real challenge.
