I'm being teased D: One of those phones will officially be mine tomorrow morning. MetroPCS ran a huge deal on them this week and my oldest brother caught it on the very last day. As both my other brother and I are currently using half broken Huawei's, this pretty much counts for two Christmas presents for the both of us.

Anyone here have the Galaxy S III? Anything I should know about the phone aside from the fact that I definitely need a good case?

personally, i never use cases for my phones. these high end phones now a days are beautiful gadgets, and i don't agree with shielding them and not being able to appreciate it, i understand wanting to protect them and stuff but to me not worth it.

so i wouldnt say you definitely need a good case, but that being said id go with samsung official flip cover thing if you have to.

congrats its one of the best phones itll be a world of a difference compared to your previous phone, i was torn between this and the i5 when choosing upgrades.

I got one last sunday...so far I don't really have any complaints. Don't settle for the default stuff...it's very customizable and there are many great apps that blow default stuff out of the water.

I got a note 2, a bit bigger, but pretty much the same thing. Great phone. Also these phones are great without cases.

I have one, and I would advise this:

DO NOT DROP IT.

I got mine for $0 on a 3 year contract for the black friday deal.
Love it so far.

I got the Otterbox Commuter case for it. Only complaint I have is that it makes the lock button fairly hard to press in.

..and my only complaint for the S3 is how fast it drains battery if you don't enable the power save mode. I've had mine go from 80% to dead overnight.

Why are people buying nexus 4 phones without it supporting 4G LTE? Am I missing something?

Does that have anything to do with the fact it doesn't support LTE?

Not sure anymore. I just wanted to point that it was unlocked and it's pretty cheap.

My phone supports LTE but it isn't available anywhere within 50 km of my home, jokes on me. :(

OT: The S3 was my first phone so I can't really compare it to anything but I love it so far. I usually hate touch screens since the keys are so small but with the larger keypad option and big screen size the phone is pretty much perfect.

How long can phones even use 4g? Every time I try with my Galaxy S my phone runs out of power in less than an hour.

I know my phone is much worse than the new ones, but still 4G kills my battery life and wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me not having it.

Got my S3 a week ago ($30 refurbished on black friday from att).

Running ParanoidKANGdroid + lean kernel, easily getting 48h+ out of a full charge w/ 4g on the whole time. Custom rom + kernel are the secret to battery life.

get it rooted and put in custom roms if you want better battery life and performance.

I've had my sgs3 for about 3 months now and as soon as I got it I rooted it like I do all my androids. I've been runing cyanogenmod 10 for almost the whole time i've owned it and I can tell you one thing, there is nothing better than a fully rooted droid running cm10. All the complaints about battery life, customization, all that stuff is irrelevant when you have 100% control over your phones hardware.

I'll quote from this article:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6474/nexus-4-includes-support-for-lte-on-band-4-aws

The conclusion is that the Nexus 4 at present curiously includes the software profile on MDM9215M that enables support for LTE on Band 4 (AWS), and users only need to set the appropriate network type preference in Android to use it. None of the other bands that there are even power amplifiers for have LTE support, which is unfortunate for users in places where carriers aren't running LTE on AWS, such as the USA. For example, in the USA, AT&T previously discussed plans for LTE on Band 4 but has only rolled out LTE on Band 17 to date, and is rumored to be turning to refarming its PCS (1900 Band 2) and Cellular (850 Band 5) holdings for additional LTE capacity, perhaps in the stead of AWS. T-Mobile US however will use AWS for LTE. Nexus 4 LTE support is definitely unofficial (and somewhat surprising) at this point, but if you're lucky enough to be in a place where your carrier has rolled it out on Band 4, it's just a setting away.

I can only see buying this phone of you have access to LTE on AWS which is unlikely in the US. Or are a TMobile user with high hopes they get on the ball rolling it out.

AOKP and AOSP give a lot more customization options than CM10 imo. The mashups are the best though, handpicked features from all 3 popular developers

I've been using CM10 for a while but this thread has made me want to change it up a bit.

Looking at CMA + Leankernal. anyone have experience with these? Galaxy Nexus

Right now on my Nexus 4 I use AOKP unofficial nightlies with stock kernel (looking to change the kernel soon, just waiting on more stable custom kernels).

The thing that I like about AOKP is just how much customization can be done with it. It really gives the full control over the phone that you want.

Also, how does LTE affect the battery in comparison to HSPA+?

Battery life is so crappy on a s2 skyrocket even with a rooted phone and proper firmware, I have to recharge it everyday even under moderate use. But I am curious to how long does it last for the s3 owners?

turn down brightness, turn off gps, vibrate, bluetooth, etc if you're going for battery life.

Seeing right around 2 days uptime with normal usage atm

also I was on a samsung captivate before this, with like 10 hour battery life on the 3 yr old battery, so the battery life may not actually be as good with the s3 as my biased mind thinks
