People joke about cancer, aids, autism, handicaps, ww2, 9/11, ISIS, everything. It's a good way to cope with everyday stress.

Obviously, joking about 9/11 with someone that lost a parent there is a dick move, but everything can be a dick move if you're with the wrong people. For every joke in the world, there is a person who has lived through it and would get (rightfully) offended, and I really don't see the reason not to joke about it unless that specific person is around.

The important part about jokes one knows could be offensive is to know the people you tell them to well enough (either from context or experience) to determine that they won't take great offense.

It's similar to the "is calling someone a retard a joke if they're not retarded" (it's still offensive, but it is in fact a joke).

It's offensive to people who have contemplated suicide OR lost someone very close to them, and under those circumstances it is indeed not a joke, that's when it becomes bullying.

You can make a joke about it or try to make it into a joke and nobody is trying to make it into a joke. Nobody is saying "Oh haha, people killing themselves is funny". But telling someone to kill themselves can be funny because it is extreme and unnecessary. It's like putting out a candle with a fire hose or paying a black guy to follow you around for whenever you need to say "nigga". This is also why "rape" is so prominent in competitive communities, there are few worse things you can do to a human.

It's important not to censor things based on our feelings because what is considered offensive is 100% subjective and people will keep lowering the tolerance level to fit their idea of acceptable offensiveness. Why stop at "kill yourself"? What about "i don't like you", "you suck", and the devastating "you're bad at tf2"?

This is a case where adjustment needs to be made on your end. Understand the difference of making fun of something and using it as a comedic device. Stop taking things personally and don't try to change the world so you don't ever have to feel bad. Your state of mind shouldn't be based on what you cannot control.
