Could you please run the benchmark with hyperthreading off and 2 cores disabled, i'm curious how would it run @i3 8350k (although i guess it'll be the same.)

Also what cooler are you using.

There shouldn't be a huge difference (unless you're streaming or using alot of resource intensive applications while gaming) to a i3 8350k at the same clockspeed because afaik Tf2 doesn't utilize more than 3 threads.

I'm using a Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT. My cpu is delidded aswell otherwise I probably wouldn't be able to hit more than 5 ghz without getting too hot/switching to a good AIO/Custom Loop.

Old C2Q system, I'm planning on getting some decent 1066mhz RAM/ made-for-OCers 800mhz RAM.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 OC'd 3.9 GHz (can't go higher due to RAM frequency limitations, I would love some 4.2 GHz with aftermarket air cooler)
RAM: 2x1 stick low-profile ddr2 800mhz 5-6-6-18, 2x1 stick ddr2 800mhz 5-5-5-15 (all oc'd to 931 mhz, if I go any higher it crashes even for 6-6-6-20)
GPU:ASUS custom Geforce 9600gt 512mb Gddr3
MOBO (if want): ASUS P5K vanilla (It has a lot of vdroop, no pencil mod done)

All settings maxed (excluding AA, set to off due to vram limitation and set to Trilinear), DX9.
Resolution: 1366x768 fullscreen
mat_phong, speculate and bumpmap set to 1.
No custom cfg set, other than mat_queue_mode 2

2639 frames 45.312 seconds 58.24 fps (17.17 ms/f) 3.600 fps variability

**probably going to test this benchmark with some comaglia cfgs, or messing with stock clock**

Another occasion for another experiment. This time I made use of the ongoing GPU prize craze that's been happening - selling my RX 480 4GB for $400, then adding 100 more to get a GTX 980 Ti (it's also my first NVidia card since... ever?), which is about 25-30% more powerful than the RX 480.
It also seemed like a good opportunity to find out if blaming my Radeon for lower-than-expected performance was justified or not. Also included the results of a temporary shit-tier GPU (Radeon HD 7770) I used while waiting for the new card to arrive.

Tested on: Core i5-3570K @ 4.3 GHz, 8GB DDR3, Windows 10 Pro 1709.
TF2 configuration: mastercomfig (midquality preset), 1440x900 windowed, mods: explosions, no bullet dust, no soundscapes mod

For any non-nerds out there, I'll also put the performance rating measured in percentage compared to RX 480 (data taken from TechPowerUp - relative performance).

RX 480 4GB (100%): 127.47 fps - https://imgur.com/e0m1umz
HD 7770 1GB (27%): 130,87 fps - https://imgur.com/q8odAc3
GTX 980 Ti 6GB (132%): 130,11 fps - https://imgur.com/AjVVKcM

If you told me this makes no sense, I really wouldn't argue, I don't know what to take away from this. I thought my current CPU isn't bottlenecking my system, but in the other hand, johnf's system with the same CPU (but 100 MHz higher) and a weaker card reaches 200 fps. Maybe comanglia's cfg is just so much faster, idk, I'll try this config tomorrow and update the post.
Or maybe it's the single-channel DDR3 memory... I was planning on getting another 8GB stick to get 16 gigs in total next month, I'll have to test that too.

To be bottlenecked by the GPU in TF2 you'd have to replace it with an Etch A Sketch.
Single channel RAM, possibly lower clocked/worse timings too and the updates that happened since 10 months ago certainly don't help.
Also different config and

Additional notes: also using nohats mod and the minimal blue sapper explosions thing

You're using midquality, which isn't comparable to Comanglia's config at all. It enables shadows, ragdolls, dynamic lighting, effects and water reflections.

Yea, I was a bit in a hurry publishing these results, so here's more:
(forgot to mention: I'm also using the explosion mod, the no bullet dust mod and the no soundscapes mod - applies to the previous post as well)

compquality didn't really cause any gains:

2639 frames 20.215 seconds 130.55 fps ( 7.66 ms/f) 9.262 fps variability

comp, however, was significantly better:

2639 frames 16.819 seconds 156.91 fps ( 6.37 ms/f) 11.698 fps variability

Given the performance boost I got in CS:GO, I expected a bit more off of TF2, but oh well.

SetsulTo be bottlenecked by the GPU in TF2 you'd have to replace it with an Etch A Sketch.

I'm thinking so too. In fact, I have a GeForce 210 I could also use to benchmark TF2 on, just for science...

What guessing?
Switching configs isn't as seamless as I'd like it to be, I'll go with mastercomfig's comp preset for now, and I'll test comanglia's in free time, maybe later today :)

Guess I'll plan on getting 8 gb ddr2 800mhz, than going for a discrete used GPU (i'm interested in a 780/780ti usually for productivity, due to CUDA acceleration).

If you're on DDR2 then single channel RAM might not be your problem.
Dual channel RAM doesn't help when both your CPU and your GPU suck.

regretting the 1950x since i never do anything with 13 of it's 16 cores lol im dumb. i get like 80fps on midfights, better fps on the computers at lan that had an i5 @ 3.2GHz and a 1050Ti :(

i hope you play other games to put that 1080 to use lol, otherwise that might very well be the most expensive tf2 machine i've seen

Why the hell would you buy a workstation CPU for games? It is worse than the 1800X at games. Allso spending that much in a Ryzen setup and not getting fast ram? What?
