- Half life 2, while being a good game, is directly responsible for the poor state of the FPS genre currently.
- Bethesda can't make a complete game
- Bugs aren't as big of a deal as people make them out to be, particularly in single player games
- TF2 was at its best circa 2011
- Goldrush is the best pub map in tf2
- Sleeping Dogs was the best of the "GTA" like games.

vvv actual unpopular* opinions vvv
- arena fps games suck
- jrpgs suck and aren't even a real genre
- fallout 4/skyrim are overall way better than their predecessors because of the action gameplay
- dark souls 1 is a 6/10 (the second half is just garbage incarnate); dark souls 2 is like a 7
- nier automata is way more pretentious than any walking sim i've ever played (still a good game though)
- walking sims are actually really enjoyable
- witcher 3 has a lot of flaws that no serious critic has yet addressed (waiting on you anderson)
- mass effect 1/2 default femshep is better than mass effect 3's
- bioware is not remotely a sjw company. has everyone already forgotten the fucking beauty pageant and every scene involving miranda?
- dragon's dogma is not a skill-based game
- dunkey isn't even that funny
- lootboxes are legit the only thing that keeps me playing overwatch
- r/games is a travesty
- if we can be influenced by our media (we can) and if games are an abnormally violent media (they are) then games are potentially contributing to violence. replace violence with racism/sexism and i think this still holds true. by that token, game creators have a responsibility in the messages that they send with the content that they create

Oxenfree is the only walking simulator that had characters i cared for other than the good ol' TWD 1 cast, and the fact that it didn't became a huge game just proves to me that garbage like life is strange is gonna keep winning over sensitive teenagers.
It's a shame Bastion is considered a pillar of the indie game phenomena, the gameplay is just bleh.
Tony Hawk Underground 2 is the best game in the franchise.

Street Fighter 4 was the least enjoyable in the series. Slower than SF2 somehow.
Arena shooters are doomed to fail in this day and age, even if you dumb down the mechanics and make "tank classes".

'The Logical Journey of The Zoombinis' is one of the best games of all time.
1) TF2 has been going downhill for many years. perhaps even pre-WAR this game was better than it is nowadays.
(had i started playing TF2 today in stead of when i did many years ago, i might not have even reached 10 hours of gameplay: the terrible MM system, the many many bullshit unlocks, the absurd amount of retarded cosmetics...)
and if you're thinking, "but pre-WAR doesn't have my favorite 6s unlock!", well yeah, but it also doesn't have all the bullshit unlocks that are totally banned in whatever league you play. 99% of us started in pubs after all, where everything goes.
2) less than a handful of unlocks actually added something to the game. i mean, picture all the unlocks (if you even know them all): how many of them would you really miss? two? three?
almost all unlocks are either redundant or just had a terribly poor design to begin with.
3) i love the crossbow, and never even use anything else, but i honestly feel that it never should've been added to the game.

i. Most of the open world games are just games pretending to have a lot of content by making a huge and boring world, throwing in a huge number of boring collectibles, boring side-missions and boring times where you have to go from point A to point B. There are rare games that do open world properly (like The Witcher 3, where most of the side quests are more interesting than main quests in other games). The Batman Arkham series is the best example of that, Arkham Asylum was so much better than Arkham City because of it, even though Asylum's bosses were mostly boring, City was just so annoying to play with all the "go to point A to the point B of the city" while beating up boring enemies.
I really hope the linear games make a comeback. During the last console generation they were mostly shit because of almost to no content and mostly boring story and characters, but at least you knew what to expect from the get go, they didn't pretend to have a lot of value adding a lot of boring and lazy content like the open world games tend to do.
ii. Grinding and random encounters are other really annoying ways to make your game pretend to have a lot of content, this makes most of the JRPGs shit. Chrono Trigger is one of (if not the) my favorite single player games of all time, but I could never get to like any other JRPG I have tried because of random encounters and grinding, they are just really annoying mechanics that no JRPG developer wants to get away from.
iii. Progression systems have no place in competitive games. If I can't play at the same level with a new account that I play on an old one because I haven't unlocked boosts, abilities or items yet on a competitive game, I don't even start playing the game. This is something that mainly happen in Call of Duties and Battlefields. TF2 is also guilty of that, if I hadn't started playing in 2009, when there were only some few unlockables, I would've probably never kept playing.

half life 2 + episodes aren't just good, they're the greatest singleplayer fps to date (still flawed, but god damn they good). also people bitch about the airboat/driving sections way too much, they were decently interesting. the only really unfortunate parts are the occasional unskippable cutscenes, and in most cases they offered pieces of the environment to fuck around with while those happen anyway.
any of the battle royale games are a terrible choice for an esport. if the rng element can be reduced, they might work, but right now there's no way to consistently win those games at the highest levels, effectively making the winners of tournaments random. there's a difference between a highly competitive top level of skill, and the game just doling out better tools to some players.
nintendo's games, while fun, are not half as innovative as people make them out to be. they just do a better job at implementing that particular graphics style than anyone else.
civ and games like it are incredibly boring. they basically are just tricking you into reading an encyclopedia. they involve no skill outside of "memorize this skill tree faster." games like empire earth had a similar concept of tech progression but minus all the bullshit
this is a long one, but i've heard a lot about how flawed 5cp is as a spectator sport because of how slow it sometimes is in europe. 5cp is significantly more flawed from a player's point of view than the spectator's. there's almost always stuff to talk about, even in some of the stupid slow 15-minute-stalemate games. Pretty much every cast I've seen, when teams stalemate, we get a recap of the last fight and then we settle into a play by play of the offclass or sac. i feel like stalemates are perfect for more in depth discussion, or even gossip about the players. commentators should be more willing to talk about basic shit during stalemates, too--why teams are holding where they do, could they perhaps uber exchange (if not, why not), how would they break the stalemate if they were playing? Also commentator bias (to a point) shouldn't be avoided, it's actually really engaging, even just talking about why they might like one team over the other.

i feel like the gamecube was really underrated on release and had a plethora of good games that people didnt look for.
it was also held by its proprietary disc design, limiting developer interest, manufacturing, as well as total optical storage.
its rugged and durable as hell but it had too many small missteps to find as much success as it should have.
