they’ll make that money back but if they gave tf2 a 1 mil tourney it would just be a b4nny paycheck and 3,000 viewers

I never thought I'd see valve, a company once known for creating iconic and incredibly original games, jump on the bandwagon of these incredibly stupid and shallow 'trendy' games, especially a fucking card game

what makes it impossible to make an original/iconic card game?
the FPS genre is cluttered with uninspired clones and fad chasing yet valve managed to do well there, so why can't they do the same in this genre?

I mean to be fair they have the creator of magic the gathering on the design team, I'm sure this isn't going to be absolutely shit with someone who made one of the most iconic card games ever behind it.

valve is not a creative studio anymore they simply look to make profit. just look at how csgo is treated by the dev team of the (((BILLION))) dollar company. they have so much success with steam and dota they dont *need* to make original content they have too much exposure and brand loyalty.

fps games are way way way more complex and have more room to improve in a number of different areas and aspects
games like half life and portal have so many things going for them: story, puzzles, gameplay mechanics, characters, the world itself, etcetera.... a card game will never be able to surpass or even come close to matching a well made fps singleplayer game in these ways
even if you think comparing to singpleplayer games is unfair, just look at other multiplayer games like tf2 and cs:go, things like aim, movement, gamesense, strategy, communication make the game so deep and the skill ceiling so high that games like hearthstone and presumably this one just look laughable in comparison
card games are really truly shallow games that are only made because companies like blizzard and valve found out that they can make a cheap, inferior, less technically impressive game and come out with a huge profit

Idk man, chess has none of those things (except strategy) and it has quite the high skill ceiling. I don't think card games are inherently limited or shallow just because they don't have those elements.
That being said, I assume this one is.

Here's some links to help you better form your own opinion about it with more information.
That being said, it's not fair to pretend like deep strategy and such is exclusive to FPS games just because they have certain mechanics not present in other games. Other genres will have their own special ways that make them skill intensive, so just because there is not aiming or something does not make it impossible to make a game that has those sorts of qualities. Now, I'm not saying Artifact is going to be hugely skill intensive or not, I'm just saying it is possible and it isn't good to dismiss it right away as an objectively bad game based on the genre.

That is entirely dependent on the personalities and objectives of the people that work there. Without pressure to make something on time to avoid shutting down, you have a lot more creative freedom to make things a lot better. Of course, you can also have the attitude that they won't take advantage of that freedom and will just sit on their money machine. However, I believe because of their position as a private company with many talented and passionate people, they are going to be using the extra resources they have to make something great.

IDK if people saw, but it was confirmed that Richard Garfield started working on the concept several years ago (before Hearthstone existed) and pitched it to Valve 4 years ago when he realized it could be skinned with an ARTS shell who hired him to then work on it.
For those who don't play card games or are oblivious to them or whatever, Richard Garfield is basically the Icefrog or John Romero analog to card games. He's the guy who put the genre on the map essentially, has very good design sense, and just overall is a great designer.
More than anything this is what has me hyped, a passion project from Garfield - someone who has long wanted to fix the problems Magic has and fully take advantage of the digital space for card games - is exciting as hell and probably is to anyone who has actively played Magic hardcore in the past.
I honestly don't know why Valve didn't lead in with this on their original announcement since there's a ton of people who will see the name Richard Garfield and instantly be on board, but Valve does seem to have a history of underwhelming opening announcements then casually dropping big news out of the blue, they did that with Half-Life 2 even, showed off a physics tech demo then later basically went "by the way that's actually a real big part of the game".

Maybe reserve your judgement until you try it out, you might just like it.

i'm surely not the only one who assumes this game will be a great card game. the problem is, it's a fuckin card game.
valve is known for amazing, immersive titles with an absurd amount of soul (tf2 included).
we, or at least i am disappointed that a company capable of creating incredible games, is making a dull card game. there is no gameplay, there's no world. for anyone interested in card games i'm sure they're excited, but fuck what a letdown for us normal people

Bucakethere is no gameplay,
Mechanical gameplay I guess? Which I mean sure but mechanical gameplay isn't the sole thing that makes a game exciting to play, and what we've already seen shows solid complexity on the macro side of gameplay.
You have to manage 3 different mana resources, pick your heroes based on synergies, have good hero placement both to win your lane & be able to utilize your color cards properly, try to earn gold and decide how to spend your gold economy to win the game on your heroes, manage/watch 3 lanes at the same time and pay attention to cross-lane effects, coordinate combos to push in tower damage, know when to forfeit some tower health to gain an advantage on your next round, pay attention to initiative between rounds, etc.
If I'm honest, and Gabe said something along these lines too, it's probably going to turn some players off like DotA does because it's the antithesis of simple Hearthstone-esque gameplay.

loserline49I never thought I'd see valve, a company once known for creating iconic and incredibly original games, jump on the bandwagon of these incredibly stupid and shallow 'trendy' games, especially a fucking card game
every single one of valves current lineup of games (except for l4d maybe but does that count?) is a sequel to or ripoff of a game made by someone else

Hiring the devs to make a more polished version of their ideas is considered ripping off?
Like I understand why people hate valve but cmon
