TF2 update for 3/28/18

I really wanted to get back into playing some TF2 today with the promising new update and the 'revamped' competitive queue, but there's so many issues. Among others, there's no class limits, super short games with 2 round limit (think 3-minute rolls on 5cp then 3h wait for next game), ridiculously unbalanced teams, maps which half of the players have never even seen before, horrendous forced settings (viewmodels, etc)

Worst of all, however, is the glacial queue times. As of typing this, I've been in queue for around 6 hours and have completed 2 games within the first 2 hours, and then literally no game at all since 9am GMT (whilst setting max ping to 140 which includes NA central/west + all EU servers). It's 1pm GMT right now as of typing this; literally 4 hours with no game

PirateerIt's 1pm GMT right now as of typing this; literally 4 hours with no game.

At least tf2pl is coming out for EU on April 1st (monkaS about the date though)

Other criticisms notwithstanding, the matchmaking is probably just broken right now. Every time they release a major update, it's nearly non-functional for a while. We'll have to wait for that to be fixed before the queue is usable

70 FOV and viewmodels enabled.. if they don't remove the forced setting, barely no one will ever play MM after the 1 week hype.

Is anyone else's FPS dropping a LOT when they open the main menu?
I drop to 3 FPS just for pressing ESC, like it comes back when you close it but its annoying as fuck!!
Also my badge is just complete black...

That's happening because you're touching a func_regenerate. AKA a resupply cabinet. It double shoots the projectile when you do that.

It'll basically never happen in a game setting.

Surely it will even out after a few weeks as pubbers and morons don't gain rank quickly. So eventually you ll have better players playing better players consistently

Obviously everyone gets thrown together at first.

fuck I'm not playing MM then. Way to many settings are locked with this.

viewmodel fov needs to be adjusted and expanded on in the advance options menu
and seriously a lot of the settings in fps configs should just be done when setting tf2 to "low" anyway...
hell the pixelfog one should just be set for the best viewability by default for everyone regardless of preset.

Also Dx9 flames on burning players absolutely murder FPS on a lot AMD GPU systems. I have no idea why, but with a old PC (AMD CPU and GPU) of mine I rarely dropped below 90fps in dx8 and in dx9 I was around 75, but if there was a burning player near me my fps would tank and it would get worse the closer they were to the point that if a burning player was standing directly next to me my fps would be below 10fps... This was a few years ago and I filed a bug report for it with the exact system I had. This issue still exists on that system and for the heavy on my HL team who has a Intel CPU and a recent AMD GPU in dx9. Issue still doesn't occur in Dx8. Issue also occurs on a spare PC I have that's an Intel CPU and a AMD GPU.

Plus with the Competitive MM settings most people with 144Hz and especially 240Hz monitors will no longer get the frame rates to support it unlike in CSGO. Which really detracts from the whole "competitive" part of MM.

They seriously need to relabel it as casual 6s. What they are offering just isn't a competitive gamemode.

i wonder what their reasoning for keeping the forced graphical settings is, especially in such a restricting way and everyone had been complaining about it since MYM. 'level playing field' is pretty bullshit

I feel like the fact that Sketchek's Bequest is on the extinguisher's weapon stats is even bigger than just a tribute, shows that they are willing to accept the community and embrace it inside of the game

competitive matchmaking needs some sort of prize from valve to actually be deemed "competitive"
AFAIK, you still can't even see your comp MM rank anywhere but in MM itself

When did they say that?
I've heard it before but it does not make sense, since that reasoning would apply to all kinds of game modes, not just comp. And of course there are a ton of things that turn people off the game that they could fix, but the one time they care about that is when literally nobody wants this shit. Also these shitty settings probably turn more people off the game than streams looking slightly better.
I've also heard that dx8 would be a lot more work for them, which i i'm quite convinced is their reason for restricting it to dx9.

Anyone know how to get my custom hud back? I really dislike the stock hud as it brings a lot of confusion and well, gameplay wise, I want to see my health out of the corner of my eye without having to look at the corner of my screen. Thanks in advance!

Go watch WarOwl or Greekgod or any new TF2 player playing competitive mode for the first time. They didn't care nor notice any issues with the enforced graphics settings. Your perspective is biased because you are too attached to your FPS configs. Level playing field, standardization and accessibility is a necessity for the integrity of the competitive mode long term. That said, they should definitely add as many commands/settings as possible to the options menus so that FPS config level graphics can still be achieved while maintaining fairness.

It's easy to "not care" about the settings when they are unaware of the fact that alternative settings exist. You can't just claim that they were completely content with the default settings when the option to alternate them were never presented to them.

Honestly I kinda agree with you, but the main problem is that Dx9 is bugged for a rather large portion of systems albeit I only have anecdotal evidence. Some of the settings enforced are a bit ridiculous see "r_pixelfog", and finally on "low" settings in TF2 I get no where near the same FPS as I do in CSGO even when you account for the difference in player numbers.

Well maybe then valve should work on optimizing their game because their current idea of a "level playing field" puts everyone on the same level - the sewers

Even if it is just blissful ignorance, the point is that competitive mode can still offer a fun experience for casual players despite the graphics restrictions, which is a very good thing.

The progression will probably always be Casual -> Competitive -> 3rd Party Competitive. If you've already reached that final stage of getting involved with 3rd party competitive TF2, being outraged about something that only does good for the competitive scene as a whole while not interfering on your main mode of play is pretty silly. The restrictions aren't even currently that bad, you just need to approach it with a more open mind. But of course, more settings available and more optimization would be great, as long as it's accessible for everyone, even the newest players.

I'm not attached to a config, I'm attached to the ability to fucking play the game without it resembling a powerpoint. Your perspective is biased because your game still functions well on non-fps config settings, which is not representative of the majority of players.

b4nnyGo watch WarOwl or Greekgod or any new TF2 player playing competitive mode for the first time. They didn't care nor notice any issues with the enforced graphics settings.

These two players also have ridiculous pc setups because of their jobs, they are hardly the average.

Guarantee you any player with some fps experience playing on a non-powerhouse computer will find tf2 matchmaking aids to play because of how unoptimized the game is compared to other fps titles (i.e. ow and cs mainly, maybe even qc at this point lol).

Edit: this internet is aids b4nny's new post didn't even load

Agreed that in game competitive being fun is obviously important, but at the end of the day it being a game mode that is competitive in nature and has medium-high stakes (as opposed to casual's 0 to low stakes) is what ultimately differentiates it from casual which makes the ability to run the game all the more imperative imo. Your fps doesn't matter if you just dick around in casual, but it should matter in competitive because it's, well, competitive.

How does restricting settings for everyone a good thing for the scene? Please explain.
"That said, they should definitely add as many commands/settings as possible to the options menus so that FPS config level graphics can still be achieved while maintaining fairness."
The only reason i can think of for the dev team to restrict settings instead of doing this is that this takes effort to implement.

well the game runs like shit for a lot of people without fps configs. maybe their perspective is biased because they dont want to play with 60 fps on a 10 year old game.

if valve were to add the level of customization that is available with fps configs to the advanced options in-game there obviously wouldn't be any argument to be had, but i would very much doubt they would do that because it would involve a lot of work.

even then i don't really understand the level playing field argument. anyone who is able to play well on default graphics probably will, and anyone who isn't would use an fps config. unless valve think it would be unfair on the hightower heavy mains trying out comp for the first time who don't know how to use an fps config, in which case they're going to get steamrolled anyway.

restricting the settings is the correct way to improve the experience for everyone
this said, valve need to fix tf2 before they enforce this everywhere, there aren't many systems that can run 12v12 pub, with only in game options tweaked, on 144+ fps and these cost multiple thousands dollars, not your average gamer's pc
also change default internet and hud settings

restricting settings and standartization works if the settings are acceptable, which they´re not by a fucking mile
how many greekgods and warowls have tried the game a couple of times never to bother with it again, never really understanding the potential of the game because of the lack of a good first impression of the game as a mechanical DM experience with much more to it and not just the hat hoarder that it currently is that is fun to play once every 6 months
should we value the opinion of someone that just installed the game over the ppl with 5+ years invested in the game ?
they don´t know any better ..... its fucking ridiculous that there´s people that even think that
a month from now everything will be the same as it always is after the hype from these "revolutionary" updates cool down
