@OpenFortressDownloads for Open Fortress are currently suspended due to an arrangement with Valve. This suspension is temporary and we will keep you informed on future developments as they come - stay tuned!

@tf2classicHi all. As of this post, downloads for TF2Classic are temporarily disabled due to an arrangement with Valve. This includes direct downloads to the mod through our website, Discord, and launcher. This is only temporary for now. We'll keep you posted for further information.
People seem to be theorising that these will be getting official steam releases, but I am not too sure. I think it's definitely something to do with distribution but maybe something with minor legal issues has to be addressed. Either way it seems that Valve, at least some part of it, has taken interest in these mods.

I really wish this could lead into further development of the main game, but past experience is a cruel bitch

Valve going from selling their own games, to selling hats and others' games, to selling hats made by others for their own games and now finally possibly selling their own games, but made by others, is the peak of "work smarter, not harder."

I've played with the maintainers of OF before and got to know them a little bit, they just wanna see more people experience an uncorrupted blend of fortress classic and fortress 2. They're also really talented and exactly who Valve strive for to entrust their production to.
I don't doubt this is gonna yield a really good thing in the future

Less of a "Valve is getting in contact with mod devs" and more of a "mod devs reach out to valve and valve c&ds them immediately after being made aware of their existence because they are or were using stolen src code and or assets" lol

They don't lose money on people playing HL tributes. HDTF is $10 on Steam, so they actually make money off that garbage. If people go to play improved versions of TF2 they aren't being forced to stare at crate roulette; Valve can't have that.
It's sad that there are any longtime members of the TF2 community, and especially the competitive subset, that think Valve sees TF2 as anything more than a casino from which it can leech money by adding more hats. These mods remove the main source of income in TF2, so it's extremely unlikely they're interested in incorporating them into the main game.
In all likelihood, they utilize leaked source code and Valve isn't cool with that. Why else would it be necessary to suspend new downloads? The reason twitter says "temporarily suspended" is imo because they're still figuring out the legalese of these mods existing. Until one of these mod devs explicitly come out and say otherwise, you are just setting yourselves up for yet another disappointment by believing anything else.

Seems another one has been taken down:

@LambdaFortressLambda Fortress Extended download links have been taken down temporarily due to an arrangement with Valve, more news on this later.
The longer this goes on the more it seems to be a legal consideration than redistribution, especially due to the language of all of these tweets. Again, we don't have enough information to say for certain either way. It can be the creation of official steam pages as we have seen with Half Life mods, or it can be a cease & desist because of the potential use of leaked source code from a while ago. The only ones who know for certain are the developers and Valve, until then we can only guess.

if it was a c&d the language everywhere wouldn't say "temporarily" with so much certainty

If it wasn't a C&D then why were they sent "Please remove the infringing content immediately" from Valve's legal team? From the head of their legal team, Liam, no less?
Like I hate to be the bearer of bad news but these projects were using illegally stolen shit that they had no rights to be looking at, let alone utilizing in their projects. It's curtains for these projects unless Valve specifically wants otherwise.

I know a lot of people here aren't a fan of McVicker but its not him reporting it (someone else) and its not incredibly promising so there's not much reason to lie about it.
Tldw
Essentially it is a Cease and Desist as Valve had no idea any of these projects were going on, and they were using Source Code unofficially causing Valve to freak out. Part of this problem is due to the fact there has been no official way to mod-tf2 / distribute it, causing to things being used without Valve's ok + its apparently difficult to contact the correct person to get a Source Code licenses. Once Valce caught wind of it they sent it to their legal dept and sent out a C & D.
The 'good' news is that they might be willing to let these projects continue under some form with Valve's permission, in something similar to how the l4d modding scene works. Of course its relying on Valve to actually do something, and for modding communities to propose what they'd like from valve to continue their work.
That being said I'm not an affected modder nor do I have any official knowledge that this is correct outside of the McVicker video so someone else (Mastercoms) could probably explain the situation better.

I mean it's only in Valve's benefit to let these mods continue development and let these modders work on the game that they've pretty much abandoned, it would be ridiculous if they nuked all these mods instead of just making a few legal changes. Maybe further down the line Valve could add finished parts from these mods to the base game as like a modder's update, like how they add workshop content
