One could say that the context when this was written is different but this book is supposed to be written by allah and is supposed to guide muslims lifestyles.
As someone who lives in a muslim country the overall mindset here about these attacks are that they deserve it because they killed muslims in Syria .
Uh, bud, from Muslim to Muslim, while yes that particular verse is from another period of time, you do remember that the Quran is not the definitive source of Islamic law. Yes, I said it. There are other Islamic law sources.

I'm not a muslim , you have to understand that those guys who kill themselves for allah are well versed in their religion , and it's really hard to believe that a book written by god himself is only valid for a set period of time .

2112The Bible is actually way more violent and spiteful than the Qur'an
Please don't say things like this I actually find it offensive. Out of all the stupid posts in this thread this is the only one that has made me mad. Sure the bible has violence but it is nothing like the quran at all. Really this has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have seen on here. Before you reply could you please go out and read both the quran and the bible (which is something you obviously haven't done) and then think about what you said.
Also peaceful religion am i right guys? xD http://i.imgur.com/uP80YOm.jpg

the racism, arabs show for other ethnicies has caused voilent bloodshed in Southern Sudan for decades. ISIS, dehumanises their opponents and see them as lower then them, and proscecute or genocide ethnic minorities. It's about time Saudi arabia goes into the 21th century, such a racist, oppressive country, and they became recently the head of the UN human rights council, what a joke.
the european nations spend, the entire 18th and 19th century, bringing the world into modernity, and waging war against slavery, guess where most of the battles were. and when the local barbary's protested, they cited qu'ran and claimed the slaves are inferior. such deep rooted racism, can only be thwarted by a complete revolution in the mindset of the region, ergo colonisation. which did way more benificial things to the meditterrean than people would think nowadays, as it's seen as very evil and oppressive, but look at what was before.

If that's what he meant okay. For a second there I thought he was implying that the supposedly "racist west" is responsible for this tragedy.
If that is what he meant, then wow. I'm sure that's the reason they decided to kill 150 innocent people in the name of their imaginary friend.

DarkdwarfDunno if I misunderstood what you meant with the link, but the Ottoman Empire was ruled by turks.
Yes it was, just like England was ruled by Normans, but that doesn't mean the local population all suddenly turn into turks as well, the Ottoman empire was a multicultural and multireligious empire, but have this instead then, if you're convinced arabs never particapated into slave trade (who do you think builds the skyscrapers in Mecca today?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_slave_trade
From Islamic literature, manifestations of racism and racist discrimination subsequently followed within the Islamic world.[1] For example, an Arab poet in the 7th century wrote: "The blacks do not earn their pay by good deeds, and are not of good repute; The children of a stinking Nubian black—God put no light in their complexions!"[86]
Ethnic prejudices developed among Arabs for at least two reasons: 1) their extensive conquests and slave trade;[1] and 2) the influence of Aristotle's idea of final causes which argues that slaves are slaves by nature.[87][POV? – discuss] A refinement of Aristotle's view was put forward by Muslim philosophers such as Al-Farabi and Avicenna, particularly in regards to Turkic and black peoples;[1] and the influence of ideas from the early mediaeval Geonic academies regarding divisions among mankind between the three sons of Noah.
Ever wondered why Africa never developed as much as Europe, or the middle east? Imagine if for centuries, all your neighbours use divide and conquer tactics to extract as much resources (material and human)
In April 1998, Elikia M’bokolo, wrote in Le Monde diplomatique. "The African continent was bled of its human resources via all possible routes. Across the Sahara, through the Red Sea, from the Indian Ocean ports and across the Atlantic. At least ten centuries of slavery for the benefit of the Muslim countries (from the ninth to the nineteenth)." He continues: "Four million slaves exported via the Red Sea, another four million through the Swahili ports of the Indian Ocean, perhaps as many as nine million along the trans-Saharan caravan route, and eleven to twenty million (depending on the author) across the Atlantic Ocean"[94]
In 2003 a high-level Saudi jurist, Shaykh Saleh Al-Fawzan, issued a fatwa claiming “Slavery is a part of Islam. Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam.”[35] He attacked Muslim scholars who said otherwise maintaining, “They are ignorant, not scholars ... They are merely writers. Whoever says such things is an infidel.” At the time of the fatwa, al-Fawzan was a member of the Senior Council of Clerics, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body, a member of the Council of Religious Edicts and Research, the Imam of Prince Mitaeb Mosque in Riyadh, and a professor at Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, the main Wahhabi center of learning in the country.
According to multiple sources, religious calls by Islamists have also been made to capture and enslave Jewish women. As American journalist John J. Miller said, "It is hard to imagine a serious person calling for America to enslave its enemies. Yet a prominent Saudi cleric, Shaikh Saad Al-Buraik, recently urged Palestinians to do exactly that with Jews: 'Their women are yours to take, legitimately. God made them yours. Why don't you enslave their women?'" [36]
Remember how hard the former pope had to apologise for quoting a Byzantine text? here we have one of the most prominent clerics, openly allowing slavery and calling muslims who are against slavery unbelievers. and this person is still in place, untouched, becuase in a racist society like saudi arabia, that is normal

yes, becuase he has self-blame syndrome, a typical thing that occurs in rape victims, "A helpful type of therapy for self-blame is cognitive restructuring or cognitive–behavioral therapy. Cognitive reprocessing is the process of taking the facts and forming a logical conclusion from them that is less influenced by shame or guilt.[6]"

World is a pretty fucked up place, events like this remind us of how different we all are, we need to celebrate how much alike we all are, for example talk about our love of TF2. After all, that is why we're here.

ikpure"Whoever kills an innocent person is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an, 5:32)
Yup, and then there are 100s of passages telling you to kill people for the most absurd reasons. How do extremists reconciliate both texts? Notice how your passage speaks about "innocent" people - extremists just say the people they kill aren't innocent... And Quran text totally allows that. The Bible too, has room for a lot of violence. Most religious texts do, discussing which of them does the most is pointless to me.
Religion has had bad and good aspects but today it's outdated. Secular morals, ngo's, modern democracies, academia and science provide all it once had of good with way less of a bad part.

There is a difference between discussion and slinging shit.
Discussing things usually stops when people start name calling. Discussion usually stops reason goes from causative to generalizations about entire subtypes.
For instance: This thread makes me feel like Europe is a bunch of inbred shitlords with no tact.
That's not discussion. It's an opinion, but there's not much more to it than a brazen attack at people/cultures. It may very well be qualified by a minority, but it is a generalization made about a minority.
Another instance is: This issue has been brewing for much longer than most of this community has been alive, we're seeing it explode lately because the people that are causing it are now biting the hand that fed them.
Fairly well constructed stance since the US and other parts of the Western world have been allowing these areas to go unregulated/unquestioned for quite a few decades. It's a little ignorant/simplistic, but can be expanded on.
Not understanding the difference between shitslinging and constructed thoughts is the epitome of forum "discussion" and it's cool, we get it, you have an opinion. But it's bad and you should feel bad.

"Don't say that we shouldn't politicize the deaths in France. The killings were a political act. They were the result of political manoeuvres made by others. To deny the political nature of the violence is to deny any comprehension of their meaning." - MRN
Sympathy for the victims is a given.

We never learn from our mistakes... We bomb another nation and try enact our ideals of how society should work upon them. We don't view this as terrorism. But, when these terrorists bomb our nations and try enact their ideals on us, this is terrorism. I want to clarify that I think this event was an absolute tragedy and those who did organised it and are still alive must face justice (life behind bars, the death penalty is what they want) and I'm not a Muslim but I think it's hypocritical that we pray for those who lost their loved ones in Paris when we don't pray for those who lost their loved ones in our orchestrated attacks on their governments and people and because of what we did, they no longer have stable governments capable of fighting off these terrorists allowing them to grow in strength.
My thoughts are for those who all died in Paris, and in any terrorist attack, and for those who died under my nations coalition that caused regional instability.

...jesus fucking christ, this was right near where I used to live
just as a reminder: this is precisely what IS wants out of reactions. they want to easily justify what they're doing, and this plays flawlessly into that. don't let them have this

Sheepylol2112The Bible is actually way more violent and spiteful than the Qur'an
Please don't say things like this I actually find it offensive.
(3:56) & (3:151) This is refering to the punishment in the afterlife for unbelievers, no need to worry if you don't believe in hell or the Islamic account of it.
(2:216) refers to Jihad and when it's permisssible (the only case when it's permissible to kill), refer to the verses before:
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors." (2:190)
"Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors." (2:193)
(4:74) Fighting for God’s cause includes the liberation of the oppressed, meaning the helpless men and women who are yearning and praying for freedom. The believers fight for God’s cause, and the disbelievers fight for the sake of their idols. An idol may be taken conceptually. For example, evil or greed may figuratively be construed as idols. The believers should put all their trust in God the Almighty and Powerful and fear not the disbelievers and their evil plans. Evil plans are always inferior to goodness.
(8:12) Battle of Badr as discussed before.
(8:39) Read the preceding verse
"Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place." (8:38)
Clear enough.
I tried my best to avoid getting involved in these stupid bashes on Islam but that picture triggered me rofl.
Bottom line, If you want to criticize Islam make sure you read and understand the Quran before getting into an arguement, you can post as much misinterpreted and out-of-context verses and we can explain them all ( I won't cause i cba), it's like bashing politics without knowing 1/50 of policies.
The term mujahid is derived from the verb jahada, which means “he struggled” or “strove hard” or “exerted himself”, namely, in a good cause and against evil. Consequently, jihad denotes “striving in the cause of God” in the widest sense of this expression: that is to say, it applies not merely to physical warfare (qital) but to any righteous struggle in the moral sense as well (Asad, The Message of the Qur’an), and this answers your "peaceful muslim" verse.
I believe the point of this thread is to sympathize and offer condolences to the poor victims, there are sites to answer your smartass critics on religion, good luck being the tough guy there.
Stay strong frenchies.

59% of Americans think torture is justified.

can't we just be sad about a tragedy? this conversation is bound to come up every time something like this happens but i think we forget why it came up in the first place. almost 150 people died and all we can do is argue about the people who did it. like others have said, focus on the victims, not the perpetrators. do NOT give the attackers the publicity and discord they want. please.
edit: i got downfragged after 10 seconds... sad
