I'm having a lot of fun with this game tbh, even while solo queuing, but I'm also the type to enjoy tf2 pubbing by myself as well so ?

I do feel like comparing tf2 to this game is pretty wrong, but I've been saying for months now that this game is more akin to monday night combat over any other game I've played so far. This game plays a lot differently from tf2 competitive-wise too, I was playing in-house PUGs with a bunch of tf2 players yesterday and it was kind of like playing musical chairs with classes, trying to outplay the other teams composition more than anything. It's incredibly stressful to play, but I think it's just because I haven't taken a new game seriously in a long time because I'm still debating picking OW up as a competitive game to play around in.

My biggest fear about OW is what Blizzard is going to do in regards to cheaters. Blizzard is well-known for having extremely lax reactions to cheaters in their games, more in regard to botters. Diablo 3 came out on May 15, 2012, and botters popped up shortly after that. It took them until a month or two ago to start punishing botters that were well-known in that game (basically 4 years later). There are already people that are suspected of cheating in OW comp scene, but there really is no way to even report players in-game as there's no report function for cheating, just toxic players.

Besides that, I think the current "meta" is pretty rough since it's more stressful than fun, at least in PUGs. I think it's neat that people can hard counter certain classes, but being forced into certain roles (double supports/tanks...) is not the most fun to play both as or against. Other than that, I've been averaging about 10 hours a day since the beta opened on the game, and I don't regret buying it, but I'm still on the fence about actually competing in the game itself in its current incarnation.

mathsad maybe i'm alone in this but the hud in overwatch is one of the worst i've ever used. being "polished" isn't an excuse when its not practical and you are constantly looking down away from the action to look at your health or ammo. there's a reason lots of custom tf2 huds put the health close to the crosshair or make it extremely big.

Better than paladins, at least it actually feels done. Presents abilities well to newbies. Perhaps health could be more upfront. Battleborn is even more of a cluster-fuck in terms of UI and distracting things, so when you compare OW to modern new shooters it's at least super clean. (haven't played doom/any cods/bfs)

Playing soldier or demoman with cl_interp 0.1 is most definitely shit.

This and it's just not as welcoming to newbies. No dmg numbers by default, the quick match or find a server experience seems poor from their perspective when you're used to queueing quickly for other games.

Several that are more fun, like mercy healing shift. Fly to any target makes support more satisfying. 6v6 tf2 is beginning to feel limited to me with just soldier/scout/demo movement options. Sure perfect rocket jumping is satisfying but you can still perfect your blink skills and find creative places to use movement.

Glad some had deeper thoughts than trashing it in one line. Seems like a fine experience that happens to utilize my learned-from-tf2 skills, strange to see such bashy reviews from tf.tv but there are valid points.

If I recall, there was botters in Hearthstone(such that they would play the game for them to collect gold and such) in order to get cards with ease. For example if it would take a normal human probably 3 months to get 100 cards, the bots did it within one month. When they finally punished these botters, they promised to "unban" them 3 months later as they still kept all their cards, and a lot of people in the Hearthstone community somewhat found it to be a poor decision that they were not going to be permabanned, then as of then Blizzard made it where anyone that would bot AFTERWARDS would be permabanned. Pretty much people got off with a little slap on the wrist and got to keep all the cards they didn't truly earn.

Tbh hero switching isn't as big as you learn more about competitive. There is still a lot of hero switching depending on the section of the map, or if the other team makes an extreme comp change for whatever reason. You really don't hard counter heroes as much as people claim though. Like if a team runs a winston, I'm not going reaper just because it counters it. And vice versa, if im winston and they switch to reaper I can still do work on winston. Execution is still really important regardless of comps.

Tbh hero switching isn't as big as you learn more about competitive. Been playing it for a few days now and I dont see how it could be a competitive game.
Preface, yes I KNOW its a beta, however:
-The game is in need of serious balancing.
-Theres so much shit happening its hard to track.
-Half the time in fights you cant see whats happening because its a clusterfuck.

Firstly, for people saying balancing isn't need, you're blind. There are so many overpowered things in this game.
1) Widowmaker is so overpowered its untrue, you can spam the sniper without unscoping, it charges fully in under 2 seconds, her smg is also way too powerful considering shes a sniper class. Her ultimate is literally a global wall hack. The only shit thing about her is her E ability.
How to balance her? Have her unscope, make her ultimate only reach a certain range not global and/or only have it work for team-mates close to her.

2) Mei is so ridiculous, Her clip capacity is 200 and its basically an ice-thrower which INSTANTLY begins to slow you down as your hit by it, eventually freezing you if its hitting you long enough, which she can kill you in one shot. The wall ability isnt so bad. Her E ability is overpowered also, invulnerable for ~3 seconds and heals to almost full health.
How to balance her? Its so overpowered it needs some serious nerf, id suggest having her freeze effect as her E ability, sort of like a special ammo, that only has 50 capacity and her gun act as a normal gun without the slow effect.

3) Bastion, isnt so bad and can be quite easy to counter, however he has unlimited range for the amount of damage he does, should be some drop off. (Talking about his shift ability here)

4) Genji, I love genji, but his reflect ability is kinda overpowered.

5) Mccree, FUCK McCree, His stun ability shouldnt be a thing, they shouldnt exist whatsoever. Youre stunned, cant move or move your aim and he can instakill you. All stuns should be removed from the game. Everything should be counterable in a competitive game (with exceptions e.g Mercy ult) and stuns arent, theyre dumb.

6) winston's tesla cannon and symmetra's gun shouldnt basically have auto aim, this is dumb.

I should have slept instead of writing this, excuse any dumb shit or mistakes.

saying the hud in overwatch is better than the ones in other games does not fix the fact that the overwatch hud is shit. health and cooldowns need to be made way more prominent and they need to remove the flashy shit that happens when you get kill streaks. changing the font would probably help as well.

and again, polish DOES NOT MATTER if the practicality is nonexistent. i would rather they literally put big numbers in non-antialiased fonts on the hud rather than what they have right now if it meant the info was better presented.

These were annoying to me as well, McCree's stun ability can eat shit. I don't know why they thought movement denying capabilities like that were a good idea.

I played Winston a bunch and I love LGs but his tesla cannon almost felt like more of the flamethrower in TF2 (shit ass comparison). Your crosshair didn't actually have to be on the person you're trying to hit they practically just had to be on your screen if you were in range enough to hit them.

First night had 2 pugs running at once, and started @ 8 and its currently 1 am and we are still going!

while i agree there can be balancing changes made, a lot of those problems you list seem to just be inexperience vs playing those characters

i had a hard time against double mei strats, but i didn't feel like she was really overpowered tbh, she's really irritating but it's not like she's invincible and you can still zone her away by just shooting at her from range

imo widowmaker just needs to be made so that her ult only affects her over giving the entire team wallhacks, i think that would be a totally fair change to something that is already ridiculous. also i've used her traps to kill tracers/genji and things chasing me so many times that it's ridiculous, saying her poison traps are useless is just wrong imo

i don't mind bastion because he's countered by a handful of things that can take him at range or pull him out of his sentry mode. the only real problem i've had is playing against him when the entire team is damage buffing him + placing shields to protect him, although that just leads to the ability to attempt to get around their team and flank a greater threat

i feel like genji reflect is just inexperience, i always try to wait for him to wantonly pop it and just bodyshot/headshot him for the kill since he can't do anything but blade dash away or try to kill you, if he runs he's dead. i feel like it's really easy to abuse currently just because so many people are trying the game out for the first time, i was tilting pretty hard on day 1 when getting killed by my own reflected headshots, but after i learned to just wait, he hasn't been anywhere near as irritating to play against

mcree is really strong, but i wouldn't say his flash is the only reason he's so strong, he just outputs so much damage at any range in both solo and group fights lol, i wouldn't be able to think of a nerf that wouldn't make him completely useless though i think he shouldn't keep 50% of his meter for failing to trigger his ult

i haven't had any qualms about melee range guns having autoaim in regards to winston/symmetra

imo i think meter should be drained when dying, but switching heroes should have no penalty in regards to meter

i'm definitely going to post the same feedback in the beta forums, but i think it's stupid you can wipe a team and their mercy comes out of nowhere with full meter and just revives everyone after you've been killing her over and over

edit: i made a large post about the ults and i think the entire post got deleted because i mentioned i'm a tf2 player, unless each post is moderated before posting lol

ya playing ow and just listing shit that tf2 does better at isnt gonna make u like the game more or any open to learning how the different mechanics work

theres a lot of things i like about tf2 that arent in overwatch and arent really ever gonna be in overwatch but theres some pretty fun interactions in the game that i am enjoying learning through scrims/qp

real talk if u cant figure out how to work ur way around those pubstompy heros that just punish disorganized players who cant keep track of heros/cds ur not gonna have fun anyway and should just hit up badwater

Shuntf.tv full of so many god FPS players that you don't realize how biased you are about a game that is so out-dated.

Quick pluses of OW:

1. Quick to play, jump into a game, with a completely standardized format of 6v6. No finding a server, clicking a quickplay icon that makes you wait a few minutes to find a server that may or may not have a legitimate game.
2. An extremely polished HUD/UI/interface. It took me all of 10 seconds to change my key bindings for Zenyatta when I realized I wanted to swap jump/orb of harmony. It's really well designed in so many ways.
3. There's many advanced movement mechanics that are easier to understand than sticky/rocket-jumping. Rather than just those 2. Tracer blink/recall, widow grapple, junkrat jumping, reaper teleport
4. Teamwork still required even in pub play. If your teammates solo feed into a point you will not suceed. When randos team up and work together, strong team play wins out.

Of course all of you are Gods at the game, you've spent years playing a movement oriented FPS that OW has been admittedly modeled on. Are you saying you don't enjoy top scoring games on a regular basis? Keep in mind you're playing people who have just started playing the OW beta and probably don't play FPS often.

Go watch the Gamespot part 2 (return of 90s shooter) to see that 1. OW is based around movement skills 2. the OW team understands why TF2 competitive was mildy popular but that many hated normie TF2 for things like insta-spawn 2fort meat-grinders.

Many casual gamers are getting into OW because they see the fun that can be had in team-based FPS. Some of these gamers had been turned off from TF2 for various reasons. The default TF2 experience is shit. The default OW experience is extremely well polished and makes you want to play as a team, with friends or solo.

Foxwhile i agree there can be balancing changes made, a lot of those problems you list seem to just be inexperience vs playing those characters

Please tell me how a sniper who can spam her gun without unscoping is my lack of experience and not her being overpowered

Foxi had a hard time against double mei strats, but i didn't feel like she was really overpowered tbh, she's really irritating but it's not like she's invincible and you can still zone her away by just shooting at her from range

It's hard to zone away a class from range when youre defending a point and she can just walk forward and press E when she's low.

Foxsaying her poison traps are useless is just wrong imo

Foxi don't mind bastion because he's countered by a handful of things that can take him at range or pull him out of his sentry mode. the only real problem i've had is playing against him when the entire team is damage buffing him + placing shields to protect him, although that just leads to the ability to attempt to get around their team and flank a greater threat

As I said, Bastion isnt too bad, the only thing i dislike is the range on his sentry mode, theres no drop off, which is dumb.

Foxi feel like genji reflect is just inexperience, i always try to wait for him to wantonly pop it and just bodyshot/headshot him for the kill since he can't do anything but blade dash away or try to kill you, if he runs he's dead. i feel like it's really easy to abuse currently just because so many people are trying the game out for the first time, i was tilting pretty hard on day 1 when getting killed by my own reflected headshots, but after i learned to just wait, he hasn't been anywhere near as irritating to play against

I'm saying this from the Genji perspective, its the class ive played the most with about 80% of my time. I still think its overpowered.

Foxmcree is really strong, but i wouldn't say his flash is the only reason he's so strong, he just outputs so much damage at any range in both solo and group fights lol, i wouldn't be able to think of a nerf that wouldn't make him completely useless though i think he shouldn't keep 50% of his meter for failing to trigger his ult

i haven't had any qualms about melee range guns having autoaim in regards to winston/symmetra

Mei is the only character I'm going to quickly defend here seeing as I've played quite a lot of her.

In 1v1 situations with squishy classes, Mei is likely to win. She's built around being able to win a 1v1 because she's fucking shit in group fights. Her ice-thrower does fuck all damage, and the ice shards take a second to charge and shoot. Once Mei freezes you, she has one shot to take with the shard before unfreezing and most of the time even that won't kill the enemy she's fighting. Due to the crap damage/spread of the thrower, if you try to freeze multiple targets, chances are you'll get one before the rest of the enemy team kill you, so it wouldn't even be useful for your team.

Her shift ability, which freezes her into a block of ice, is quite similar to the phlogistinator in TF2, minus the damage buff. It's quite easy to see she's locked in a block of ice and wait it out to attempt to kill her. Treat it like a small uber, don't waste ammo on it.

She's quite like the Pyro, she's better off sitting back helping her team or being a flanky dickhead. She's close range and should be dealt with as such. She's a dickhead, but she's not overpowered.

Except the ice wall, that's some bullshit right there lmao.

I can really say much for her since I've played her only a little and mostly against her. Honestly the only thing I find frustrating is the ability to instantly slow anyone down from simple holding mouse 1 near them and eventually freeze them. She can do this to ANY class even when in an ultimate. The freeze shouldn't be an instant passive effect imo, should have to be activated. If you're thinking the wall is bullshit then maybe swap her wall for the special ammo idea in which she has to activate it to slow someone down.

I can honestly say that after playing pugs for about 6 hours last night, that this is the most fun Ive had in a long time. Please, don't just take all your criticism from pubs, its like saying TF2 is a terrible game because of this valve badwater server I played on. When you get a team that you can work together with and coordinate ultimates and such, it becomes far more rewarding. Playing against another group of people that are trying their absolute best to win makes it feel like an entirely new game. And, honestly, control point right now, is far far far more entertaining imo. Because a winner is actually chosen and everything feels so much more clutch in OT. This game will have a bright future for players, as a spectator sport is where it will lack however, it's going to be very hard for blizz to get a 6v6 arena shooter with ultimates and audio blasts flying across the map to be spectator friendly, too much going on and the game as of right now is feeling too fluid, which may change into a more explosive type game in the future, as it is a beta. Definetly going to be picking the game up and trying to do something with it.

since overwatch's sensitivity works on integer increments, here's a quick tip for anyone trying to accurately replicate their desired sensitivity:

install the QL accel driver and modify the post-scale X and Y sensitivities with the following formula:

postscale_sensitivity = DESIRED_INCHES_PER_360 / OVERWATCH_INCHES_PER_360

example:
you want your sensitivity to match 12 [inches/360].
