counter opinion:
if you're a medic or a soldier and you fear product you should probably grind your dm because those 2 classes are actually incredibly influential at the highest levels on that map

koth should be the main 6's gamemode. its much better for spectators and stalemates are impossible
(i grew up playing 5cp and love it to death but its not the best option to be honest)

I think it's more about balance. RGL introduced a third KOTH map but it was only for divisions with pick/ban, so I don't think there were many Bagel matches (at least compared to if it was in a regular weekly rotation). I'd rather play four of 5CP and KOTH (or all 5CP) if it was possible rather than the 6:2 ratio we have now.
There's also nuances in the current situation with rounds too, since in theory you'd want more rounds by playing 5CP. And this could matter in the end when RF/RA is currently used over head-to-head.

rounds for/rounds against is an awful system
I'm pretty confident that's not an unpopular opinion, but yeah

I like koth for the lack of stalemates but I think its bad for figuring out who's the better team when its a close match up. It isn't uncommon to trade the point back and forth then luck out and happen to be the first team to reach 3 minutes. You can trade rounds back and forth and "get lucky" in 5cp too but the rounds you win against evenly matched teams feel more satisfying because you had to execute more things properly to get there. Since there are more things your team has to be good at, you're also less likely to.be evenly matched in the first place and even when you are, there's a better chance it'll be in a way thats interesting. For example, a team with really good mids vs a team with amazing last holds/transitions. I also dislike every team fight happening in the same area and I find the whole not capping so your spawns get there faster thing really annoying and artificial
My ideal game mode would combine 5cp and koth. Idk how it would actually work, but i think there's a way you could use a koth like timer/capture point system to encourage constant in 5cp style maps. It would probably come at the expense of the both teams are attacking and defending at the same time dynamic tho.

all community leagues were and are ill-suited for popularizing tf2's competitive play, and that's why there's no investment other than minor sponsors, individuals and private capital. it has nothing to do with the meta excluding classes.

I've never seen an engineer main with okay game sense or DM after almost 8 years of TF2.
Probably a combination of how braindead most engi mains are + how little impact the class has even if they're good.
Many of the best engi players throughout TF2's lifespan have been HL players who play other classes.
They get put on the class because there are more HL teams than there are okay engineer mains to fill the slots.

Was actually thinking about exceptions like spamfest when writing this. Spamfest's a beast. And one of few exceptions. Only one I could think of off the top of my head
I should've clarified I meant it as "I've never encountered one". Sorry!
Then again it's supposed to be an unpopular opinion
I'm glad spamfest got to show off his potential by playing a class with actual impact
