How helpful is learning to type properly? I've used both my index fingers to type all of my life and I'm majoring in computer science so depending on the job and career path I take after I could be around a keyboard my whole life. Is learning to type properly really that much more helpful? How much quicker can you write up a paper or code?
Well you do get 8 fingers to type for you instead of 2. However, I think it would take time to adjust to typing if you change the way you type now so it would take a while before you can type quickly. If you're fine with the pace that you're typing at now, you should stick with it.
if you are going to be typing for a living it would absolutely be worth the time investment given how much time you'd save in the long run
unless you somehow type 100wpm with 2 fingers because you are a wizard

It seems like shit when you grind through it, but when it is all said and done you will be very happy
How many words per minute can you do now? I know people who can do just as fast as touch typers with just their two index fingers
I would say that if you feel that you're already proficient in typing the way you do (80+ WPM or so) you should just stick with it. If your current class requires a lot of typing, it can't really help to take 2x the time to type everything for a month to get back to where you were anyways.
I've never felt the need (read: too lazy) to learn to type correctly, I can still break 90 WPM with just my index fingers and left thumb.

stick to the home keys and learn to properly type. keyboard was designed to be used in this manner, so you'll adjust quicker than you'd think.

What's your WPM right now? I've only taken one java course so I can't speak volumes to the importance of typing speed with coding, but I feel like as a whole you'll be better off by learning to properly type. Even something as simple as backspacing can be done quicker when you're not moving your entire hand over to the backspace key but instead hitting it with another finger.

I think it's worth it. Even if you type at a decent speed, you'll most likely type twice as fast once you learn how to type with all your fingers (minus one thumb I guess).
http://www.typingweb.com/ is pretty cool. I already used the standard typing method when I found this site, but it still taught me how to properly use my pinky fingers and how to fix some other minor problems I had.

Hunt & peck for CS? Yikes.
Get on that Mavis Beacon money, homie. My elementary school drove that shit into my head. I didn't win any awards but it made life a whole lot easier when my house got its own computer and I could home-row it.

It is absolutely one of the most valuable skills to have if you spend a lot of time using a computer. Writing a paper is pretty much stress free.
I learned to properly type a couple months ago, went from 60 wpm to 100 wpm with a bit of practice.
I used http://www.typingweb.com to learn the basic positions and stuff.
I use http://10fastfingers.com/typing-test/english to practice. I mostly practice while I'm waiting for a pug or watching a movie.
The transition will suck at first but once you get the hang of it you'll see a lot of improvement.

Typing speed isn't that important, but if you type with only your index fingers chances are you type really slow. I type in a pretty irregular fashion (basically memorized the keyboard layout and whatever my muscle memory remembers I go with), but being able to use 8 fingers like Geknair said is a huge speedup. I don't see you typing very fast with only 2 fingers so I'd attempt to try using other fingers.
Also, it'd save you a few seconds to type your posts. Think about how many seconds to minutes you save on each post, and how often you'll be typing (essay and GE's, everything). You want to learn to type fast, and it doesn't have to be "proper", so long as it's accurate enough and fast enough.

I type with all of my fingers but I don't really follow homerow. Whichever finger gets to a key first is what types the letter.
Your method of typing is about as important as your TF2 sensitivity. Different typing methods work for different people. Two people may be equally efficient at typing with two completely different forms.
At the same time, there's still going to be preferred popular methods of typing. In my opinion you'd find a benefit in using more fingers whether that means using the home row strat or not, but judging from the responses in this thread you can still get some pretty good speeds even typing index.

I use like a hybrid of hunt and peck and the home row and i can type like 110-120 wpm consistently
it's all just about muscle memory and what works for you

How fast can you currently type? It would seem a bit painful to just use index fingers, but if it works for you and you can type fast AND comfortably, go for it.
LOL I thought everyone did this I type with my index fingers only too.
my boyfriend types with only index fingers and he's a software engineer at google
doesn't REALLY matter, but he's always talking about wanting to learn how to type properly because it speeds things up considerably
I know how to type so sometimes when I type really fast I feel like God

It's not hard, it just takes forever and feels weird if you know how type with more than one finger per hand (most of us). I think I can hit 40-50 WPM w/ my index fingers, though it's hard to fight the urge of using muscle memory.

Does anyone here do a hybrid style where they use their full hand on the left side of the keyboard and then the index finger on the right... cause thats what I do.
I can't imagine how painful it would be to pick and peck all the letters that I'm typing right now, but to do that all day for homework, projects, e-mails, and such for a CS major. :x
I used to type with my index fingers for a while, and then I just made a conscious effort to use the home row. Even if I had to look at the keyboard, I used the home row method. This led to me eventually learning to type the right way, and now I type at like 110 WPM. It's not a difficult task, you just have to want to learn.
You've picked a major where you will be spending the rest of your life tapping away at a keyboard. I'd recommend doing it properly.
you generally dont think ahead much of what youre doing when you program anyways, 60wpm isn't gonna kill you.
I'd learn it, but at the same time if you're happy at the speed which you type I won't be really worried about learning it. I'm currently on typing with one hand (but I use all 5 fingers) and my speed hasn't really diminished. While the keyboard is arranged to make 2 hand/8 finger to make it easier and less stressful on your hands and isn't necessarily that much faster for it to be used that way.
my typing was so fucking fast in my runescape days now that i use push to talk i don't really type that fast anymore. it's really helpful though to be able to type without looking or being able to type with more than 2 fingers.
btw i knew a guy who only used 1 finger and he was fucking fast i didn't really understand him but w/e he played runescape too lol
