What are your views on self-defeating humour? Are jokes where a person mocks themselves bad to make?

Can be funny. Makes you look self aware and confident since you can criticize yourself. However, do it too much and it will look like genuine cries for help instead of a joke.

Your title says self-deprecating but the body says self-defeating. Which is it or do you believe those are synonymous?

I thought they were both synonymous with each other. Is there a distinction?

It's not even that it looks like a cry for help, going to the same well for jokes every time is just cringe.

I think most people don't have the +CHA or +PER to make the joke, or to receive it, and then it becomes awkward for everyone involved.

this is more about niche jargon/memes serving as a sort of an unspoken handshake of shared experience. no one thinks saying "jugged" or whatever for the 5000th time is funny like a joke is funny, it just serves as a signifier of shared participation in a community, which builds trust and makes the atmosphere friendlier for all participants. the obvious last step is that people are more likely to laugh over less funny or even unfunny things in a friendly environment with people they trust.

Admittedly I haven't though about this enough to articulate a distinction, but yes I do think there is one. I googled the difference between the two and indeed someone has held this contention so I do believe there is a difference or at the very least some people do.

The hyperlink I made sums it up in the first sentence saying that self-deprecating is poking fun at yourself but self-defeating is when that becomes excessive, leading to negative outcomes.

I don't have any strong opinions on this, just something I noticed and pointed out.

Enough is enough. It's 2023 now. We've had our fun but it's time to grow up. Let's put an end to memes and this childish copy/paste culture.

I think it shouldn’t be tolerated. Any and all forms of toxicity should be punished regardless of the target.

I think it is very healthy for a person to be able to laugh at themselves. There is a difference though, between a joke that pokes fun at some of our foibles and a constant stream of self-hate that is disguised as humor. People who are only self-deprecating are no better than people who are only self-aggrandizing. You need a healthy balance in all things, and that includes humor

Which is more of a red flag
1) being too self-deprecating and constantly shitting on themselves
2) being unable to poke fun at yourself in the slightest

I think a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor can work only if it's got an air of a compliment to it, and for about as many "I'm bad" jokes there should be "I'm good" Jokes so the narrative is fresh whatever you are saying.

If done sparsely can be funny. If done too much, it makes everyone uncomfortable.
