Mechanics and Sound:
Simply put, TF2's mechanics don't feel precise. Movement is slippery and it's difficult to deftly avoid enemy gunfire or to land exactly where you want when jumping from a platform, for example. Weapons also lack weight and are cumbersome to aim. As with in Fortnite, eliminating a TF2 enemy player is a matter of luck rather than skill.

For comparison, Overwatch$29.99 at Amazon recently simplified its lineup of 29 heroes into three categories (down from four): Damage, Tank, and Support. In addition to the larger pool of playable characters, Overwatch's heroes are more nuanced in terms of individual abilities. As a result, effectively attacking and defending against enemies requires more strategy, thus making the game more engaging.
Are we just posting the highlights as comments? I'm alright with that because then less people visit their website
tl;dr dude played scout, heavy and pyro for a couple hours and decided heavy was best and pyro most fun.
"TF2's character designs haven't held up either. Playable characters look monotonous compared with those standards set by more recent games. Overwatch's heroes, for example, are distinct, vivid, and visually compelling."

I'm going to pretend I never clicked that link
edit: Team Fortress 2 is one of the defining titles in the team-based FPS genre, but relative newcomers to the genre, most notably Overwatch, outclasses it in gameplay, visuals, and the enjoyment factor. Even Valve's other multiplayer FPS, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, has remained more relevant, given its recent visual overhaul, transition to a free-to-play structure, and new battle royale game mode. There's no need to start playing TF2 if you never have in the past, and current players should make the jump to newer (and better) titles.

Although TF2 is free to play, the presence of microtransactions can also be overbearing.
This is the article that will make VALVe react. I believe
Have I upset you? Gunna cry?

I’m imaging this dude not understanding the weapon drop system, getting mad about getting killed by some unlock that he didn’t have yet, and then actually buying weapons from the Mann Co. Store.

"I had the most fun playing as the Pyro class and using the flamethrower."
He's a pyro main. Did we honestly expect a quality review from a pyro main?

PCMag Scouts move quickly and utilize a shotgun as a main weapon. Of course, this player class does not do a ton of damage, but you can certainly take out a lone enemy at a capture point or keep enemies at bay if you stay mobile and accurate.
LOL. Top tier games journalism.

"Part of the problem is a lack of interactivity. Sure, a few map objects are destructible, but otherwise, there's not much to occupy downtime. Some examples of good interactivity include the chickens that run around a few of CS:GO's maps and the destruction effects within Overwatch's maps; when you fire at bags of popcorn, for instance, individual kernels fly everywhere."
I knew it all along. All this time we were talking about matchmaking and trying to figure out how to balance the game, we should have been been campaigning for fucking chickens and destructible popcorn...

Huh, it sounds like this new game Overwatch ($29.99 at Amazon) has really fixed every problem about old FPS games. I'll have to give it a try, thanks for the tip pcmag!
if you take into acount what the default setting are and how hard movement actually is for beginners this makes sense I think.
review of a game that has been out since 2007, what?
"I have played casual TF2 for 2 hours and can determine the game is bad because I can't aim or move. Please buy overwatch, i am actually very good at clicking Q and its a much better game."
Guys the man said scout is the worst class time so shake up the meta.
okay blizzard I posted it when will I get the money?
To be completely honest there are so many different weapons, mechanics and general bullshit in this game that i'm not surprised about some random videogame journalist being utterly confused and lost while playing it. Even if you have some previous experience with similar games, it takes a while to learn and getting used to even the casual gamemode (default settings don't help to make it easier too), let alone competitive. I remember playing TF2 for like maybe 2000+ hours before learning that a comp scene existed and how did it work lol

If you're brand new to the game I can completely understand how confusing the game can be to get into. However, compared to something like Overwatch if you were to play it brand new never touching a FPS, there's plenty of confusion to still be had. Overwatch has better default settings and a better hud for beginners, but all the heroes and the art style of the game is still very confusing. I can just be very stupid but I still have a hard time spectating the game. TF2 is really easy to get into and just understand what's going on. I think the gripes about the hud are so nitpicky. "The icons are too generic" like what the hell is that supposed to mean? You can also get really good unlocks in TF2 through achievements, which is a good way to help players understand how the game works. The only thing TF2 needs for beginners is honestly better default settings. Fixing training mode would be a nice bonus though lol

If only we had good movement our game would be a massive esport but sadly we simply cannot compete with the movement of other First Person Shooter titles such as Counter Strike Global Offensive
i mean this is all valid criticism for a new/casual player
People that can't play video games shouldn't review video games.
TF2 has a lot of REAL problems but this guy is just stupid.

"Combat and movement mechanics feel inaccurate. "
ok bro

I want to believe their true intent is to get valve to the fix the new player experience because this review is an absolute ableism. The default settings are so god damn awful that your projectiles actually come out slower than other players'.
