I think they should have each load out limited to one primary and then maybe a shotgun as a secondary and a unique view model for the melee though they all operate the same way. Then each of these 'loadouts' should have changes to their movement speed and hit boxes. For example the Heavy machine gun load out makes you move really slow and gives you a massive hit box, while a pure shotgun based load out gives you a lot of movement speed a small hit box and even double jump perhaps. Everything in between is scaled accordingly, with a rocket launcher, nail gun, and grenade launcher 'loadeouts'.
I think these changes with the f2p model based upon the trading of cosmetics as well as community generated updates that are applied periodically will make the game successful on steam, because there is probably nothing even remotely similar to that on steam right now.

Uh. I was fairly sure that the "primary" combos were a big thing in Quake. Some of these changes seem alright but I can essentially see all the people who have been dutifully paying their premium ditching for the slew of new independent arena shooters.
Quake still needs to be Quake imo. They have a good formula. This isn't Quake.

Allealflamethis is a pretty radical shift if its real. Props to them for such a ballsy move. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
What if they just got a not retarded pay model and invested some resources into developing a matchmaking system like they should have from the beginning
or make a working client.

I haven't played in so many years, but when I left it the scene was pretty dead. Is an attempt to attract more players to a dead game really such a bad thing? You can still use the "classic" rules and I expect the dedicated veterans to host that exclusively.

yeah, because there's already no weaponstay, ammo control was already a completely nonexistent factor and now neither is weapon control lmao
rocket splash buff is actually really good, but a buff to rail and nerf to LG is actually super cancerous to gameplay and further encourages passive +back play which is already pretty much the way to play considering there is zero movement system
ql is dead get over it, it's arguably the worst quake ever at this point
GLOBAL AMMO PACKS? ROFL
thank god for the taller collision boxes, that was one thing that was like the most fucking archaic thing from CPM->QL that would take one simple change but everyone still playing QL is stuck in 1998

Doesn't sound much like Quake to me anymore, mainly with the loadout and general item/ammo system.

Well I thought the loadout thing sounded bogus, but when I read the whole list I thought 2 things...
1) Current players will hate this
2) This ought to make it easier for new people to break in
Specifically the part about movement becoming more intuitive (re: auto-piloty), ought to do a lot to help newer players stick with the game. I always felt my aim was fairly good, my abilty to time items passing, but my movement god-awful. This didn't make me complain about the game, I just didn't play it outside clan arena (where I felt I could improve my FPS aim and then move on to another FPS). I feel as if there were a whole lot of players in the same boat as me there.
Moving to STEAM allows for a whole new wave of interested players to see what the buzz is about. You don't want their first experience being some guy who has played the game for 10 years flying around the map at some unreal pace, picking up every item before you see them. These changes (barring the loadout oddity which I don't understand) ought to alleviate that.
If all this is real, I should like to see a "classic" or "pro" option added to the game. Something along the lines of small handicaps removed for those players who understand the game more deeply: similar to how CS changes small things in competitive mode. For that I think weapon specific ammo, and no weapon counters are a few things they could reintroduce.
Entry players would have a smaller hill to surmount to play the raw game, and should they so choose, they could learn a few more skills to make it to the pro level. That would make sense to me.
In summary though, I agree with some people in this thread who think this isn't a horrible thing. QL is dead. Might as well take the opportunity of a STEAM release to issue some wholesale changes that can help keep new blood flowing in a game that has all but bled out.

From reading these changes, it seems like the movement isn't too drastically affected. You still have the ability to do the regular strafe and circle jumps and can get just as much speed from that, but if you're inexperienced then you can just hold w and space. I don't think that's a problem. (Hopefully the new bhopping isn't just stupidly better than regular strafe jumping though.)
(Of course, that's entirely speculation, but it very much reads like that.)

I don't understand why they would make loadouts enforced as the default ruleset of Duel/FFA/TDM because it literally breaks all three gamemodes. Duel spawns are going to be a joke because starting with a weapon ruins the balance of spawns and makes it completely 100% powerup dependent. TDM weapon control is non-existent with the global 5 second weapon spawn and loadouts. FFA is now basically CA without being stacked at the start.
If you're going to radically change gamemodes in a game where the core mechanics have been the same for over a decade, make it a new option instead of enforcing it as default. This is fucking retarded.

Despite me being fairly new to the game these changes are very disappointing to me. It seems that they are trying to make the game easier in an attempt to bring in new players, yet they have removed a lot of the challenge which provides an incentive to keeps players actively playing the game.

as long as tournaments like quakecon keep using vq3 quakelive, i think it'll be fine

This for duels so much. Duels should be kept the same throughout, new players shouldn't be dueling so early anyway and can practice getting better in the other game modes. Let duels somewhat be the last place for the current players of QL.

My initial reaction was disbelief but honestly if they keep "classic" ruleset around then everyone who actually loves quake can still play classic mode and maybe this will actually bring new blood into the game. As long as its not part of the premium package and there are sufficient servers to let people who want to play under classic do so, I don't see a big deal. I doubt that the new ruleset will pull away any of the existing quake fanbase.

Hah I bet they'd LOVE to "sell out" right now. But they probably realize changing the formula would alienate the type of player that enjoys playing the same exact game over and over for years, which is probably their entire playerbase by now.

How much of a community does Quake 3 Arena actually still have? Because if these changes are made to Live, then I'm probably just going to move to 3, providing there is actually an Australian community.
Or maybe I'll just learn defrag.

im trying so hard not to write an incoherent nerdrage essay but I'm failing. cause id is just a fuckup. its the wasted potential =( quakelive couldve been so much bigger and better.
Dave_can they remove the paymodel and allow us to change the map? rofl
this...
The reason I don't play QuakeLive is their stupid pay model. Even when I have premium, I still play on free servers often because they are more populated (because not everyone wants to buy prem etc). And there is no map vote so you get stuck playing awful maps. And then I'm trying to justify paying monthly to play <insert shit map here> in a game that is essentially Quake 3 which was free in 1999 with any map you wanted including custom.
I used to think id was intentionally trying to stop everyone from playing QuakeLive so they could just shut it down. There are so many decisions that make no sense. I mean I understand that they are greedy fucks but at least do it in a smart way because this subscription model is just awful. No voting in public games, 10 second ads. They made so many mistakes. PQL as optional physics instead of CPM. Free for all changed to 8 player max (the one place noobs could have fun, now get remorselessly slammed by some guy controlling all armors and quad so FFA is now dead) No black names or clan tags (theres just no good reason for the random stuff they do =( ), The random changes like the scoreboard which is pointless at best, quite annoying at worst (shows 1 weapon accuracy instead of overall), campgrounds which was the most popular map by far being deleted from the game and replaced with campgrounds intel which gives everyone eye cancer.
The most popular game mode is CA by a large amount. And its just sad cause CA sucks with VQL physics. I mean it's okay.. but so much more fun with CPM. If quakelive had CPM physics as default awww it would be so godly...
Honestly I think the only thing Quake has left is it's reputation as a hardcore fps and id is just about to kill that. They will finish alienating their hardcore playerbase (they started with no personal servers, no mods, no custom maps, no cpm physics (pql took years and also its NOT CPM)). Splitting the playerbase with a newb ruleset isn't helping and lets face it newbs are still going to get slammed. Timing the jump button is really easy in Quake, the difficult part is mouse movement and pressing/timing the correct keys, circle jumping etc. This bhop feature sounds just retarded. Same for running with gauntlet out. The 5 teamsize limit (no callvoting teamsize) is just id making more pointless limitations. Loadouts sound retarded, like is this a troll? I want to say these patch notes are BS to make people like me angry. id cant possibly be this stupid right? RIGHT??

The thing is, it's basically a dead game now, what do they have to lose by tossing everything including the kitchen sink at it?
